Short answer
Start with a bold, simple shape on a smooth stone: a ladybug, a heart, a watermelon slice or a cute face. Block in color with a medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm paint pen, add details with an extra fine 0.7 mm tip, let each layer dry, then seal with a clear spray. Once that feels easy, move up to animals, then dot mandalas.
How to read the design cards
Every idea lists four things: a level (easy, medium or advanced), the tips you need, the colors, and the size of rock that suits it. Tip sizes follow the common paint pen classes:
| Tip | Width | Use on rocks |
|---|---|---|
| Extra fine | 0.7 mm | Outlines, eyes, small lettering, tiny dots |
| Fine | 0.9 to 1.3 mm | Writing, thin stripes, mid-size dots |
| Medium | 1.8 to 2.5 mm | Filling shapes on palm-size rocks, bold lines |
| Broad | 8 mm and up | Base coats and big shapes on large stones |
Compare every width on the tip size chart. Just starting out? The beginner guide to painted rocks covers finding rocks, prep and kindness rock etiquette, so this page can stick to designs.

Unusual painted rocks and fresh twists
Once the basics feel easy, change the rock instead of the design. A few ideas:
- Use the rock’s shape. A long stone becomes a fish or a pencil; a round one a ladybug or a donut; a lumpy one a frog or a toad.
- Leave some stone showing. Natural grey or tan rock looks great behind white line work or a single bright flower.
- Story stones. Paint a set of small rocks with a sun, a house, a dog, a tree and a boat, and use them to tell stories with kids.
- Rock families. Paint the same face in different colors on a row of rocks, biggest to smallest.
- Garden markers. Letter herb or vegetable names on flat stones and seal them well for outdoors.
- Tic-tac-toe set. Five ladybugs and five bees make a travel game; draw the grid on a cloth bag.
Kindness rocks
A kindness rock carries a short, upbeat message and is left for someone to find. The Kindness Rocks Project asks painters to write #TheKindnessRocksProject on the back, to skip stickers and googly eyes because they can harm animals, to seal rocks with a clear top coat, and to get permission before leaving rocks anywhere (project guidelines). It also asks people never to leave rocks in national parks, on hiking trails or at businesses without permission (Leave No Trace page).
Short messages read best: be kind, you matter, keep going, smile, you are loved, today is a good day. Our painted rocks guide covers kindness rock etiquette in more detail.

Seal every rock that goes outside
Let the paint dry fully, then spray two or three light coats of clear sealer outdoors or in a ventilated room. Do not brush sealer straight onto marker work: a brush can drag water-based paint. Mist a spray coat first. The full method is in how to seal acrylic marker art, and if a pen stops flowing mid-design, see paint pen not working.
Questions people ask
What are some easy painting ideas for kids?
Pick big shapes with few colors: a ladybug, a heart, a rainbow, a watermelon slice, a smiley face or a fish. Kids can fill the shape with a medium paint pen and an adult can add small details with a fine tip. Skip tiny dot work until they have done a few rocks, and keep googly eyes and stickers off rocks that go outside.
How do I paint rocks at home?
Wash smooth rocks and let them dry overnight, paint a base coat of acrylic craft paint if the stone is dark or porous, then draw the design with water-based paint pens, working from big shapes to small details. Let each layer dry before the next, and finish with two or three light coats of clear spray sealer outdoors or in a ventilated room.
Which paint is used for rock painting?
Water-based acrylic is the standard: acrylic craft paint for base coats and big areas, and acrylic or pigment paint pens for lines, lettering and dots. Outdoor acrylic paints are sold for rocks that will live outside. Whatever you use, seal the finished rock.
What are old rock paintings called?
Ancient paintings on rock surfaces are known as rock art. Painted images are usually called pictographs, while images carved or pecked into rock are called petroglyphs. Cave paintings are rock art made inside caves.
What is the best thing to paint rocks with?
For most people, a pump-action water-based paint pen such as Posca, used over a base coat of acrylic craft paint. In Sarah Renae Clark’s comparison, pump-action pigment markers held up best on rock, while most direct-ink markers soaked into the stone.
Do painted rocks need to be sealed?
Indoor rocks can go without, though a sealer protects against chips. Rocks that go outside should be sealed with two or three light coats of a clear spray. A brushed sealer can smear water-based marker paint, so spray the first coat.
