Short answer
Paint a brown trunk up from the bottom of a smooth stone, then build a round crown from overlapping green circles or hundreds of green dots, darker at the bottom and lighter at the top. For a Christmas tree, paint a stacked green triangle with a star and ornament dots. A medium tip blocks in the crown; an extra fine tip adds branches, bark and leaf dots.

| Autumn | Orange, red and yellow dots | Fallen leaf dots on the ground |
| Winter | Bare brown branches | White snow on branches and ground, navy sky |

Tips for painting trees on stone
- Trunk first, crown second. Painting the crown over the top of the trunk hides the join.
- Thin branches with the extra fine tip. Branches taper; start each stroke at the trunk with pressure and lift off at the tip.
- Dark under light. Darker green at the bottom of the crown and lighter on top suggests sunlight.
- Bare winter branches: draw a Y, then a smaller Y off each arm, and repeat. It looks complicated but is just repeated forks.
- Use a tall stone for single trees and a wide one for forests and silhouettes.
Tree rocks in the garden
A family tree rock (one tree with each family member’s name on a leaf), a memorial tree with a name on the trunk, or a forest of small pine rocks along a path all work outdoors once sealed. Garden placement and sealing tips are on painted rock garden ideas. Painted pictures on rock go back a very long way: ancient rock art includes painted pictographs and carved petroglyphs (Wikipedia).

Questions people ask
How to make your Christmas tree look vintage?
Use a softer, older palette and simple shapes: a deep green tree with muted red, gold and cream ornaments, a few tinsel-style lines, and a gold star. Large round bulbs in faded colors, a cream or kraft-paper background and a little gold paint pen read as vintage on a painted rock, as they do on a real tree decorated with old-style glass ornaments.
What does it mean when someone gives you a painted tree rock?
Usually that they were thinking of you. A painted rock is a small handmade gift, often carrying a kind message, a reminder of a shared place or a symbol such as a heart or a tree. There is no fixed meaning; the giver’s message or picture says it. Many people keep them on a desk or windowsill.
How do you paint leaves on a tree rock?
Dot them. Use the tip of a fine or extra fine paint pen to cover the crown with small dots in two or three greens, darker greens first at the bottom and lighter on top. Dots read as leaves from a short distance and hide any wobbly outline.
