Drawing marker guide: pick by the line you want

A drawing marker can mean a smooth blending alcohol marker, a soft brush pen, a technical fineliner or an opaque paint marker. Each makes a different kind of drawing, so the best one depends on what you draw and on what paper.

Short answer

For opaque color you can layer and draw over dark paper, use a paint marker such as Posca PC-1M or PC-3M. For soft blends on white paper, an alcohol or water-based brush marker. For ink line work, a black fineliner or a fine black paint marker. Many artists use two of the three together.

Paint marker drawing

Paint markers draw differently from ink. The color sits on the surface, so light colors show over dark, and you can paint over mistakes once they dry. That makes them good for drawing on black paper, toned paper, wood panels and canvas. The trade-off is blending: paint dries fast and does not melt into the next color the way alcohol ink does. Artists work around that by layering, stippling and adding highlights last.

Tip size shapes the drawing more than brand. A 0.7 mm pin for outlines and details, a 0.9 to 1.3 mm bullet for confident lines, and a medium tip for filling. The tip size chart shows them side by side, and fine tip paint markers goes deeper on detail pens.

Best drawing markers for each job

In the most detailed independent comparison we found, Posca scored highest among pump-action paint markers and its fine tips were singled out as some of the best (Sarah Renae Clark).

Black drawing markers

Black drawing markers come in two kinds. A pigment fineliner gives a crisp, thin ink line for hatching and outlines under color. A black paint marker gives a line that sits on top of other paint, so you can redraw an outline after coloring. Our black paint markers page compares black paint pens by tip and finish.

Good art markers vs good artist markers on a budget

Good artist markers share a few traits: even flow, colors that match the cap, tips that keep their shape, and paint or ink that does not streak. Budget sets can be very good for practice, but quality varies from color to color within a set. Sharpie Creative is sold with claims of no bleed-through on paper and no priming (retailer copy of Sharpie claims), which suits beginners. For the full range see art markers.

Choosing a drawing marker set

  1. Decide on paper. White sketch paper favors blending markers; dark paper favors paint.
  2. Pick two tip sizes. One fine, one medium, in the colors you use most.
  3. Add a black and a white. Buy them as singles from the brand that covers best.
  4. Test on your paper. Heavier mixed media paper resists buckling with paint markers.

Questions people ask

What markers do artists use?

Illustrators and concept artists often use alcohol markers for smooth blends. Hand letterers lean on brush pens. Artists who work on canvas, black paper, rocks or mixed media use pigment paint markers such as Posca or Molotow ONE4ALL, because the color is opaque and layers.

What's the difference between paint pens and markers?

A marker uses dye or alcohol ink that soaks in and stays see-through. A paint pen holds pigmented paint behind a valve, so the color sits on top, covers what is underneath and works on dark or smooth surfaces. Markers blend more easily; paint pens cover better.

What is the best marker for drawing?

There is no single best one. For opaque, layered drawing and work on dark paper, a water-based paint marker like Posca is the most proven in independent reviews. For blending on white paper, artists generally pick alcohol markers. For ink lines, a pigment fineliner.

What are the three types of markers?

There is no formal standard, but markers are usually grouped by ink: water-based (washable markers, brush pens, paint markers like Posca), alcohol-based (blending art markers and many permanent markers), and oil or solvent based (oil-based paint markers for metal and glass).

What are the best cheap drawing markers?

Budget brands such as Arrtx, Ohuhu and KINGART sell large sets of paint and brush markers for a fraction of premium prices. Quality varies by color, so a cheap set plus one or two premium singles, usually white and black, is a sensible way to start.
