Short answer
Paint a round, domed stone red. Fill one end black for the head, draw a black line down the back, and add round black spots on each side. Dot two white eyes on the head. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip handles the red and the spots; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip does the eyes and a smile.
Choosing a stone for a ladybug
A round or slightly oval stone with a domed top looks most like a ladybug’s shell. Flat stones work too, but a dome is what makes it read as a bug at a glance. Palm size is easy for kids; thumb-size pebbles make a cute swarm.

Getting a bright red
- Base coat white first on dark grey stones, or plan on two coats of red. Red over grey looks dull and patchy in one coat.
- Let the red dry fully before the black spots, or the black will smear into pink-grey streaks.
- Black spots cover easily; one coat is usually enough. Keep the tip clean of red between spots.

Questions people ask
How can I display painted ladybug rocks?
Line them along a windowsill or shelf, set them in a shallow bowl or glass jar, tuck them into plant pots and garden beds, or use small plate stands for a favorite. A row of ladybugs on a fence rail or a step looks great. Seal rocks that go outside and keep them out of mower paths.
How to paint a ladybug for beginners?
Start with a round stone painted red and let it dry. Paint about a third of one end black for the head. Draw a straight black line from the head to the other end, then add two or three round spots on each side. Finish with two white dot eyes. Fewer, bigger spots look tidier than many small ones.
What colors attract ladybugs?
Claims about specific colors are not well supported. Ladybugs in a garden are drawn mainly by food, especially aphids, and by plants that offer pollen and shelter, such as dill, fennel, yarrow and other small flowers. A painted ladybug rock will not attract real ones, but planting those flowers might.
