Short answer
Pick an egg or pear-shaped stone. Paint it dark green for the skin, then a pale yellow-green oval inside the edge for the flesh, and a round brown pit in the lower half. Add a face to the pit if you like. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip covers the flesh; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip draws the face and outline.
Choosing a stone for avocado rock painting
Look for an egg shape with one end a little narrower, like a real avocado. A flat back keeps it from rolling, and a smooth face takes the flesh color in one or two coats. Very round stones work for a cut half if you make the pit large and centered.

Getting the greens right
The look of an avocado is all in the step from dark skin to pale flesh. Three things help:
- Leave a rim. Do not paint the flesh to the edge. A visible dark green band is what makes it read as a cut avocado.
- Add a middle green. A thin ring of mid green between the rim and the pale center softens the jump between colors.
- Paint the pale color twice. Light yellow-green over dark green rarely covers in one coat. Let the first coat dry before the second, or paint a white underlayer first.

Avocado rocks for kids
- Pre-paint the dark green skin for younger painters and let them do the flesh, pit and face.
- Use a cut-out circle of paper as a guide for the pit.
- Faces are optional. A plain avocado half is already a recognizable, cheerful rock.

Questions people ask
What colors do I need to paint an avocado rock?
Three greens and a brown: a dark green for the skin, a mid green for the edge of the flesh, and a pale yellow-green for the middle, plus a warm brown for the pit. Black and white give the face and a highlight. If you only have one green, mix it with white and yellow acrylic for the flesh, or use a pale yellow paint pen over a light green base.
What shape rock is best for an avocado?
An egg or pear shape, slightly narrower at one end. A flat back helps it sit still. For a pair of halves, look for two stones of similar size and shape so they read as one avocado split in two. Palm size, about 2 to 3 inches, is easiest to paint.
Do I need to seal an avocado painted rock?
Only if it goes outside or gets handled a lot. Indoor desk rocks can go without, though a sealer protects against chips. For garden rocks, spray two or three light coats of clear acrylic sealer once the paint is fully dry; spray the first coat, because a brush can drag water-based marker paint.
