Short answer
Base coat a round stone blue or black. Paint a brown circle in the middle, then pull long yellow oval petals out from it all the way round. Add a second, offset ring of petals in a deeper yellow or orange, then dot the center in yellow and black. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip paints the petals; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip dots the seeds.
Choosing a stone for sunflower painted rocks
Round and flat is ideal: the flower sits in the middle and the petals reach almost to the edge. A 2.5 to 4 inch stone gives the petals room. Oval stones work if you let the petals stretch a little longer on the long sides. A dark base (blue, navy or black) makes the yellow glow; a pale base makes it look softer.

Painting petals that look even
- Start with four. Top, bottom, left, right. Then fill each quarter with two or three petals. This keeps the ring from drifting to one side.
- Press, then pull. Touch the tip at the center edge and pull outward, lifting at the end, so each petal tapers.
- Two coats of yellow on a dark base, or a white underlayer first. Yellow is one of the least opaque marker colors; see yellow paint markers for coverage tips.
- Outline last. Thin dark lines between petals add depth, but only once the yellow is fully dry.

Questions people ask
How can I paint a sunflower easily?
Paint a brown circle in the middle of a blue or black stone. Starting at the top, paint one yellow oval petal pointing outward, then one at the bottom, left and right, and fill the gaps between them. Let it dry, then dot the center with yellow and black. Four guide petals first keeps the ring even.
What are some common colors of sunflowers?
Golden yellow with a dark brown center is the classic, but garden varieties also come in lemon yellow, orange, red, burgundy, bronze and creamy white, some with two-tone petals. On rocks, a yellow and orange double ring, or a red and yellow bicolor, adds variety while still reading as a sunflower.
What are some ideas for painting flowers on rocks?
Daisies with white petals, red tulips, spiral roses on black, lavender stems, dot flowers made from rings of dots, and sunflowers. Paint a single big bloom on a round stone, or a few small flowers scattered across a flat one. Our flower rock painting page has step-by-step daisies, tulips, roses and lavender.
