Short answer
Match the fruit to the stone. A round flat stone becomes a lemon or orange slice: a yellow rim, a pale center and white segment lines. An oval becomes a watermelon slice: green edge, white band, red middle and black seeds. Use a medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip for the color and an extra fine 0.7 mm tip for seeds and segments.

Tips for bright fruit colors
- White under yellow and pink. Pale fruit colors do not cover grey stone well. A white base coat first makes lemons and watermelon flesh bright.
- Highlights sell the shape. A single curved white stroke on an apple or cherry makes it look round and shiny.
- Seeds last. Black and yellow seed dots go on only when everything else is dry, or they smear.
- Faces are optional. Fruit with kawaii faces is cute for kids; plain fruit looks good in a kitchen bowl.

Questions people ask
Which famous artist painted fruit?
Fruit is a classic still life subject, and many famous painters returned to it. Paul Cézanne is especially known for his still lifes of apples, and Caravaggio painted an often-reproduced basket of fruit. Dutch still life painters of the 1600s made fruit, flowers and food a genre of their own.
How do you paint a watermelon?
On a rock: paint the whole stone green, paint a white band just inside the edge, then fill the middle red, leaving the green and white showing as rind. Once dry, add black teardrop seeds with a fine tip, pointing toward the center. For a whole watermelon, paint it green with darker green stripes running end to end.
What are some good fruits to draw?
Start with simple shapes: apples, oranges, lemons, cherries, strawberries and watermelon slices. Bananas, pears and grapes come next. Pineapples are a good step up because of the crosshatch pattern. On rocks, citrus slices and watermelon are the most striking, since their patterns read well from far away.
