Short answer

Paint the rock one solid base color, let it dry, then add the cute face: two black dot eyes set wide and low, a small smile, pink cheeks and a white highlight in each eye. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip fills shapes and an extra fine 0.7 mm tip draws the face. Seal rocks that go outside.

The cute face formula

Nearly every cute rock painting design uses the same face: two black dot eyes set wide and low, a small curved mouth between them, and two pink oval cheeks just outside the eyes. Add a white highlight dot in each eye once the black is dry. Keep the face small relative to the shape; a big head with a small face reads as cute.

Cute rock painting designs, step by step

Paint the base in two thin coats and let it dry before the details; wet paint under a fine tip smears and lifts.

Cute easy painted rocks for kids

Cute simple rock painting ideas for small stones

Small and very small rocks suit single subjects. Pick stones at least the size of a large coin, because anything smaller is hard to hold and paint. On tiny stones, skip outlines and let color shapes do the work: a red stone with black dots is already a ladybug. Fine tips matter more here: see fine tip paint markers.

Cute Halloween rock painting ideas

Ghosts, tiny pumpkins with smiles, black cats with yellow eyes, candy corn and friendly bats all work on small stones. White ghosts need two coats over a dark base; white paint markers with strong opacity save time. Make them last

Seal cute rocks that will be handled or hidden outdoors with two or three light coats of clear spray once fully dry. Brushing a water-based sealer straight onto marker paint can smear it, so mist on a light spray coat first. More in how to seal acrylic marker art, and more designs by theme in rock painting ideas. Questions people ask

How to do easy rock painting?

Choose a smooth stone, wash and dry it, and paint one simple shape in a medium tip, such as a heart or a ladybug. Let it dry, add a face or dots with a 0.7 mm tip, then seal it if it goes outside. Two or three colors are plenty.

What are some cute rock painting ideas?

Ladybugs, pandas, smiling avocados, bumblebees, strawberries, penguins, kawaii clouds, frogs, sprinkle donuts, mini monsters, ghosts and tiny pumpkins. Give anything a small face with two dot eyes and pink cheeks and it reads as cute.

What kind of paint do you use for rock painting?

Acrylic paint. Use brushed acrylic craft paint or a broad marker for base coats, and water-based pigment paint markers for faces, outlines and dots. Seal finished rocks with a clear spray if they will be handled or left outdoors.

Can I use sharpies to paint rocks?

Regular Sharpie permanent markers are ink rather than paint, so they look faint on bare stone, though they can work for thin black outlines on a light painted base. Sharpie markets its oil-based paint markers as great for rock painting; they are opaque but oil-based, so use them with ventilation. Seal either kind for outdoor rocks, and test the sealer first.

What to paint on very small rocks?

One simple subject that fills the stone: a ladybug, a strawberry, a smiley face, a heart or a single letter. Use extra fine 0.7 mm tips for the details, keep to two or three colors, and skip fine outlines that crowd a small surface.
