Short answer
Go bright and simple: a popsicle, a smiling sun, a lemon or watermelon slice, a beach ball, flip-flops or a campfire. Base coat white under yellow, pink and orange so they pop, use a medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip for color and an extra fine 0.7 mm tip for details, and seal outdoor rocks against sun and rain.

Getting summer colors to pop
- White underlayer. Yellow, pink and light orange look muddy straight on grey stone. Base coat white, or the area behind them.
- Neon accents. Fluorescent paint pens are the brightest colors you can buy, but they fade faster in sun than standard colors. Use them on indoor rocks or touch them up; see neon paint markers.
- Black outlines make bright colors look brighter. Add them last, once everything is dry.
- Paint in the shade. Hot stones and direct sun make paint dry too fast and streak.
Summer rock painting activities
- Vacation rock: pick up a stone at a trip spot you are allowed to collect from and paint the place name and date on it.
- Summer reading rocks: paint a rock for each book finished.
- Rock hunt: paint and hide rocks around the yard for a scavenger hunt.
- Garden markers: letter herb and vegetable names on flat stones.

Questions people ask
What are easy summer rock painting ideas for kids?
Watermelon slices, lemon slices, smiling suns, popsicles, beach balls and fish: bold shapes in two to four bright colors. Paint the base color for younger kids and let them add stripes, seeds or faces. A rock painting session outside on a sunny day dries layers fast, which keeps kids from smudging.
Do painted rocks fade in the summer sun?
They can. Strong sun fades many craft paints and marker colors over time, especially fluorescent ones. Sealing with a clear spray helps protect the surface, and some sealers are sold as UV resistant. Even so, expect outdoor rocks to need a touch-up after a season, and keep favorites in partial shade.
How do I keep paint from bubbling on rocks in hot weather?
Paint in the shade, not in direct sun, and let rocks cool if they have been sitting out. A hot stone can make paint dry too fast at the surface and trap moisture or air underneath. Work in thin coats, let each one dry, and seal only when the paint is fully cured and the rock is at room temperature.
