Short answer
Paint the sky in horizontal bands: yellow at the horizon, then orange, pink or red, and purple toward the top. Lay each band while the one below is still wet and stroke back and forth along the join to soften it, or overlap a lighter color on the edge once dry. When the sky is dry, add a black silhouette: hills, palm trees, a beach or birds. Seal it when finished.
Sunset colors in order
Every sunset rock uses the same order, horizon up. Pick three to five of these:
| Band | Color | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon and sun | Pale yellow or white | Medium or broad |
| Low sky | Yellow, then orange | Medium or broad |
| Middle sky | Coral, pink or red | Medium |
| High sky | Purple, magenta or deep blue | Medium |
| Silhouette | Black or very dark purple | Medium fill, extra fine edges |
Warm bands next to each other blend easily; jumping straight from yellow to purple makes a muddy grey line. If you want that jump, put a pink band in between. Orange and coral pens vary a lot between brands, so test them side by side on scrap first. More orange options are on orange paint markers.
How to blend a sunset sky with paint pens
- Base coat white
A white or very pale base makes warm colors glow. On dark stones, two coats.
- Lay the lightest band
Paint the yellow band across the lower third with side-to-side strokes.
- Add the next band wet
While the yellow is still wet, paint orange just above it and stroke back and forth across the join a few times.
- Repeat upward
Pink or red next, then purple at the top, softening each join the same way.
- Fix hard lines dry
If a join dried with a hard edge, scumble a little of the lighter color over it in short strokes.
- Silhouette last
Once the sky is fully dry, paint the dark shapes on top, edges first with a fine tip.
Paint pens dry quickly, so work small and fast, or use brushed acrylic craft paint for the sky and paint pens only for the silhouette. Our guide to blending acrylic markers covers wet blending, layering and dot gradients in more detail.

Silhouettes that finish a sunset
- Hills and mountains: one or two overlapping layers, the back layer slightly lighter.
- Palm trees and beaches: pair well with beach rock painting designs.
- Pine trees, a cabin or a lighthouse: simple shapes that read instantly in black.
- A couple, a dog or a deer: trace a printed outline lightly in pencil first.
Keep the silhouette solid black, with no detail inside it. The contrast is what makes the sky look bright.
Sealing a sunset rock
Warm colors fade first in strong sun, so seal sunset rocks that go outside with light coats of clear spray. Spray, do not brush, the first coat, because a brush can drag the paint. Full steps are in how to seal painted rocks.
Why painted rocks?
Painting on rock is ancient: archaeologists call human markings on natural rock rock art, with painted pictographs and carved petroglyphs (Wikipedia). Today’s painted rocks are a craft and a kindness project. The Kindness Rocks Project, which helped spread the habit of leaving painted stones for strangers, began in 2015, per the National Parks Conservation Association. Questions people ask
How to seal acrylic paint on a rock?
Let the paint dry overnight, then spray two or three light coats of a clear acrylic sealer outdoors or in a ventilated room, letting each coat dry before the next. Spraying first avoids smearing water-based paint pen marks, which a brush can drag. For rocks that live outdoors, use a sealer labeled for outdoor use and recoat each season.
How to paint a sunset color?
Work in bands from light to dark: pale yellow at the horizon, then orange, then pink or red, then purple or deep blue at the top. Blend each join while the paint is wet, or overlap the lighter color slightly over the darker edge after it dries. A small white or pale yellow half circle at the horizon makes the sun.
What’s with the painted rocks?
Painted rocks are a popular craft and a kindness project: people paint designs or messages on stones and leave them for others to find, or keep them as garden decor and gifts. The Kindness Rocks Project, which helped spread the trend, began in 2015, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.
What is painted rock art called?
Ancient painting on natural rock is called rock art. Painted images are pictographs and carved or pecked images are petroglyphs. Modern decorated stones left for others to find are usually called painted rocks or kindness rocks.
