Short answer
Base coat the stone white or cream, paint a red dome cap across the top half, add a cream stem underneath, then dot white spots of different sizes on the cap. A thin dark line under the cap edge (the gills) makes it look three dimensional. Use a medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip for the cap and stem and a fine or extra fine tip for spots and gills.

Making a mushroom look round
- Curve the spots. Spots near the cap edge should be smaller and slightly squashed, as if they wrap around the dome.
- Shade one side. A darker red along one side of the cap and a lighter stripe on the other suggest light coming from one direction.
- Show the gills. A row of short dark lines under the cap edge tells the eye the cap overhangs the stem.
- Shadow at the base. A small dark oval under the stem plants the mushroom on the ground.
- Use the stone. A domed stone is already a cap; paint the whole top red and put the stem on the front face.
Mushroom patterns and cottagecore rocks
For a pattern rock, scatter small mushrooms all over a sage green or cream base, mixing red toadstools, brown button mushrooms and tall thin ones, with tiny leaves and dots between them. Muted palettes (dusty pink, rust, sage, cream) give the soft cottagecore look; see aesthetic rock painting ideas for more palettes.
| Mushroom type | Shape | Colors |
|---|---|---|
| Toadstool | Round dome cap, short stem | Red cap, white spots, cream stem |
| Button mushroom | Small round cap, very short stem | Cream or light brown |
| Chanterelle style | Wavy funnel cap | Orange or golden yellow |
| Tall thin mushroom | Narrow cone cap, long stem | Brown cap, cream stem |
| Fantasy mushroom | Any shape | Purple, blue or pink, with glow dots |
Paint mushrooms as decorations and leave real foraging to experts: many wild mushrooms are poisonous, and a painting is no guide to which are safe.

Questions people ask
Can you provide a drawing of a mushroom rock?
Yes. Each design card on this page includes our own simple drawing of the painted rock: a red toadstool with white spots, a mushroom fairy house and a pattern rock. Copy the shapes in pencil or chalk on your stone first, then paint over the lines.
How to paint a mushroom for beginners?
Draw a dome for the cap and a short, slightly wider-at-the-bottom stem under it. Fill the cap red and the stem cream, let them dry, then add white dots on the cap in a few sizes, with big dots in the middle and small ones near the edge. A thin line under the cap edge finishes it.
Where is the mushroom rock located?
The best known is Mushroom Rock State Park in Ellsworth County, in north central Kansas, a 5 acre park known for mushroom-shaped rock formations. The formations are concretions cemented by calcium carbonate, remnants of Cretaceous beach sands and sediments, and the largest is 27 feet across.
What colors do I need for mushroom rocks?
For a classic toadstool: red, white, cream and black. For brown woodland mushrooms: tan, brown and cream. For cottagecore or fantasy rocks, add pastel pink, sage green and lavender. A white paint pen is the one you will use most, for spots and highlights.
