Penguin rock painting

Penguins are made for stones: an upright oval rock, black with a white belly, already looks like one. This page has six penguin rock painting ideas, the trick to a bright white belly on black, and the story behind penguins and pebbles that makes these rocks such good gifts.

Short answer

Choose an upright oval rock that stands on its flat end. Paint it black, then paint a large white oval belly on the front in two coats. Add two eyes high on the black, an orange triangle beak, orange feet at the base and pink cheeks. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm white covers the belly; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip adds eye highlights.

Pick a penguin-shaped rock

Look for a stone that is taller than it is wide and has a flat end to stand on. Slightly narrower at the top is ideal: the narrow end becomes the head. If the rock will not stand, paint the penguin lying on the flat face of a wide oval instead. Wash it and let it dry overnight.

Getting a bright white belly on black

The belly is where penguin rocks succeed or fail. White over black is the hardest coverage job in rock painting, so plan for it:

  1. Paint the belly first

On a grey stone, paint the white belly before the black, so the white goes on bare rock and covers in one or two coats.

  2. Then the black

Paint black around the belly, keeping a clean edge. A medium tip gives more control at the edge than a brush.

  3. Second coat of white

If the belly looks grey, add a second thin coat once the first is completely dry.

  4. Details last

Eyes, beak, feet and cheeks go on only when both colors are dry.

If you already painted the whole rock black, the belly will need two or three coats; a pump marker with opaque pigment covers best. The white paint markers page compares whites by coverage.

Penguins and pebbles

There is a lovely reason penguin rocks are popular gifts. Gentoo penguins build their nests from piles of stones and guard them jealously, and a male can win a female over by offering her a choice stone (Wikipedia). Painting a penguin on a pebble, or a penguin holding one, is a small nod to that. Penguin rocks also make good kindness rocks; kindness rock groups usually suggest keeping the first rock you find and rehiding others.

Questions people ask

Is the penguin pebble thing true?

Broadly, yes. Gentoo penguins build nests from piles of stones, guard their stones jealously, and a male can win a female’s favor by offering her a choice stone. That is where the popular idea of a penguin giving its mate a pebble comes from, and why a painted penguin rock makes a sweet gift for someone you love.

What’s the deal with painted rocks?

Painting rocks is a cheap, relaxing craft, and many painters leave their rocks out for strangers to find as small acts of kindness. Kindness rock groups usually suggest keeping the first rock you find and rehiding others. Some groups share photos online so painters can see where their rocks traveled.

Where can I buy penguin paintings?

Local craft fairs, art markets and online handmade marketplaces are the usual places to find painted penguin rocks and penguin art by independent makers. A painted rock is also easy to make yourself with a black and a white paint pen, which turns the gift into something personal.

How much does a painted rock cost?

It varies widely: a simple rock from a craft fair costs little, while detailed commissioned pieces by known rock artists cost much more, depending on size, detail and sealing. Painting your own is the cheapest option, since a few paint pens and a bag of rocks make dozens of designs.
