Short answer
Choose an upright stone with a flat bottom so it stands. Paint the walls a light color, the top third as a roof, then add a round-topped door at the base and one or two windows. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip fills the walls and roof; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip adds window panes, door handles, shingles and vines. Seal houses that stay outside.
Choosing stones for painted rock houses
A house needs to stand up. Look for stones that are taller than they are wide with a flat base, or a flat side you can sit them on. A pointed top becomes a pitched roof, a round top a thatched or mushroom roof. Hand-painted rock houses read best at 3 to 5 inches tall; tiny ones work as a village set.

Painted rock fairy house details
Small details make a fairy house look lived in. Add them last with an extra fine tip once the walls are dry:
- Stone walls: loose rounded shapes outlined in grey on the wall color.
- Roof shingles: rows of small scallops, starting at the bottom edge of the roof.
- Climbing vines: one green line up a corner with tiny leaves and a few pink dots for flowers.
- Window boxes: a brown strip under each window with dots of color for flowers.
- A path: a few flat grey stepping stones in front of the door.
- A sign: a tiny name or house number above the door.

Building a painted rock village
- Vary heights. Mix tall, short and wide stones so the street looks real.
- Keep one palette. Roofs in two or three colors and walls in cream and white tie the village together.
- Paint the backs. If the houses can be seen from both sides, paint a back wall and window too.
- Seal every house with two or three light coats of clear spray, tops and bottoms, before setting them on soil. See how to seal painted rocks.
Where you leave them matters. Keep houses in your own garden or pots, and follow The Kindness Rocks Project’s request not to leave painted rocks in national parks, on hiking trails or at businesses without permission (Leave No Trace page).

Questions people ask
Can you paint exterior stone on a house?
Yes, but that is a different job from craft rock painting. Exterior stone and brick on a building are usually painted with masonry paint, mineral paint or limewash that lets moisture escape, after cleaning and any repairs. It is hard to undo, so many people test a small area first or ask a painter. Craft paint pens are not made for house walls.
Which paint is used for rock painting houses?
Water-based acrylic: acrylic craft paint for base coats and big areas, and acrylic paint pens for lines, details and lettering. Outdoor acrylic craft paints are sold for rocks that will live outside. Whatever you use, finish with a clear sealer.
Why are painted fairy house rocks popular?
Painted rocks became popular through the kindness rocks movement, where people paint cheerful designs or messages and leave them for others to find. Others paint rocks as garden decor, gifts or a relaxing hobby. Fairy houses are a favorite for gardens and plant pots because one stone becomes a tiny building.
