Rainbow painted rocks: illustration of a painted rock with a dotted flower design and a paint marker

Short answer

Base coat a stone sky blue or white, then paint arches from the outside in: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Let each band dry before the next, so colors stay clean, and finish both ends with a white cloud. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip suits palm-size rocks; use a broad tip on big stones. Seal rocks that go outside.

Rainbow color order

A rainbow runs red, orange, yellow, green, blue, then purple, with red on the outside of the arch. On a small rock, three to five bands read better than six; the classic short version is red, yellow and green, or red, orange, yellow, green and blue.

A rainbow rock row

Paint six stones, one per color, and set them in a line on a step, a windowsill or along a path. For a garden border, paint each stone solid, then letter one word per stone in white (“you are my sunshine” spread over five rocks, for example). Kids enjoy sorting the row into the right order, and a rainbow row makes a simple classroom color lesson.

Keeping rainbow bands clean

Real rainbow rocks

Some rocks are rainbow striped by nature. Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain in the Andes of southeastern Peru, gets its bands from different minerals: red from iron-bearing clays, white from quartz-rich sandstone, green from clays rich in ferromagnesian minerals and mustard yellow from sandstones rich in sulfurous minerals (Wikipedia). A painted stone is a much smaller tribute.

Questions people ask

What kind of rock has rainbow colors?

Banded sedimentary rock can look like a rainbow. Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain in the Cusco Region of Peru, owes its stripes to its mineral makeup: red from iron-bearing clays, white from quartz-rich sandstone, green from clays rich in ferromagnesian minerals and mustard yellow from sandstones with sulfurous minerals, among others.

What do rainbow painted rocks symbolize?

There is no fixed meaning, but most painted rocks are small gifts of encouragement. Kindness rocks carry messages for strangers, memorial rocks honor someone, and rainbow rocks are often painted as a sign of hope. The meaning is whatever the painter writes or intends.

What kind of paint stays on rocks?

Acrylic paint and acrylic paint pens stay on clean, dry stone, especially after a base coat. Water-based pigment paint pens such as Posca bond well to porous rock. For anything that will be handled or left outdoors, seal with two or three light coats of clear spray to protect the paint from water and wear.
