Short answer
Use water-based acrylic paint pens on smooth, clean, dry river rocks, with acrylic craft paint for any base coat. On bare stone, white line art such as feathers, vines and lettering looks striking; on painted bases, any design works. Work light pressure on the fine tips, let layers dry, and seal rocks that go outside.
Why river rocks paint so well
Moving water rounds and smooths river stones, so their surface is closed and even. Paint pens glide instead of catching, fine lines stay crisp, and you need less paint to cover. The Kindness Rocks Project says flat, smooth river rocks work best and that 1.5 to 3 inch stones are the easiest size; craft stores, garden centers and landscape suppliers sell them (project guidelines).
Prep river rocks in three steps
- Scrub
Wash with warm soapy water and a brush to remove dirt and algae, then rinse.
- Dry fully
Leave them overnight. Dense river stone holds water in cracks, and damp stone pushes paint off.
- Decide: bare or base coat
Leave the stone natural for line art, or brush on acrylic craft paint for full-color designs.
River rock painting ideas on bare stone
The natural grey of a river rock is a good background. White and bright line art reads clearly on it, and the design looks part of the stone.

River rocks and the oldest rock art
People have painted on stone for tens of thousands of years. Archaeologists group rock art by technique: paintings on rock are pictographs, also called petrographs, while petroglyphs are carved or scratched into the surface (Wikipedia). A painted river rock is a small, portable pictograph, and simple motifs such as hand shapes, animals, suns and spirals still look good on stone.

Questions people ask
Which paint is used for rock painting?
Acrylic. Acrylic craft paint is used for base coats and large areas, and water-based acrylic or pigment paint pens for lines, lettering and dots. Pump-action pigment markers such as Posca held up best on rock in Sarah Renae Clark’s comparison, while most direct-ink markers soaked into the stone. Seal outdoor rocks with a clear spray.
What does a river rock look like?
Smooth, rounded and often flattish, with no sharp edges, because moving water and other stones have worn it down. River rocks are usually grey, tan, brown or nearly black, sometimes with pale bands or speckles. Their smooth surface is why painters prefer them: paint pen lines stay crisp instead of skipping over rough grain.
What are the 7 types of painting?
There is no single agreed list. Lists of seven usually name painting media: oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, tempera, encaustic and fresco, with ink or pastel sometimes swapped in. Rock painting is almost always acrylic, either brushed craft paint or acrylic paint pens, because it grips stone and dries fast.
What are the two main types of rock art?
Pictographs and petroglyphs. A pictograph, also called a petrograph, is painted onto the rock, while a petroglyph is carved or scratched into it. In everyday speech the two words are sometimes mixed up. Painted hobby rocks are a modern, portable cousin of the pictograph.
What kind of paint should I use to paint river rocks?
Acrylic craft paint for base coats and water-based acrylic paint pens for the design. River rocks are smooth enough that paint pens glide, so medium and extra fine tips give clean lines. For rocks that live outdoors, use outdoor acrylic for the base or seal everything with two or three light coats of clear spray.
