Snowman painted rocks

Snowman painted rocks are the winter rocks everyone can paint: white circles, a carrot nose, coal dots and a bright scarf. Here is a full snowman on a blue stone, a close-up snowman face that fills a round rock, and a stacked version made from three real stones.

Short answer

Base coat the rock sky blue. Paint two or three white circles stacked up the stone, give the white a second coat, then add black dot eyes and buttons, an orange carrot nose and a red scarf. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm white covers the body; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip handles the face.

Choosing a stone for snowman rocks

A tall oval fits a full snowman with two or three body circles. A round stone works best for a snowman face that fills the whole rock. Three round stones of decreasing size can be glued into a stack for an indoor snowman.

Getting white to cover

A snowman is mostly white, and white is the hardest color to cover with on a blue or dark base:

Our white paint markers page covers which whites cover best.

Winter rock sets

Snowmen pair well with penguin rock painting for a winter set, and with trees, ornaments and candy canes on Christmas rock painting. Outdoor winter rocks face freezing and thawing, so seal them well; see how to seal painted rocks.

Questions people ask

How do you paint a snowman?

Paint two or three white circles, the largest at the bottom, on a blue or dark background, and give the white two coats. Add two black dot eyes, a row of black dot buttons, an orange carrot nose pointing to one side, a curved smile of small dots, and a scarf in red or another bright color. A hat, stick arms and snowflakes are optional.

Why do people hide painted snowman rocks?

To surprise strangers with something cheerful. The kindness rocks movement invites people to paint upbeat designs and leave them for others to find, keep or re-hide, and many towns have rock groups where finders post photos. Winter designs like snowmen make a fun seasonal hunt.

How to protect painted rocks outside?

Let the paint dry completely, then spray two or three light coats of clear acrylic sealer, top and bottom, letting each coat dry. Use outdoor acrylic for base coats, avoid stickers and googly eyes, set rocks on gravel rather than wet soil, and bring favorites in during freezing, wet weather, when water can get under the paint.
