Short answer
Paint tulips, daisies, bees, bunnies, rain clouds or ladybugs on smooth stones using a fresh palette of pastel pink, lemon yellow, sky blue, lilac and leaf green. Block in shapes with a medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm paint pen and add details with an extra fine 0.7 mm tip. Spring rocks go outside, so seal them with two or three light coats of clear spray.

Spring garden rocks and seed markers
Spring is planting time, and painted stones make plant markers that do not blow away. Use flat stones, paint a simple picture of the plant (a carrot, a tomato, a basil leaf) and letter the name with a fine tip. Seal well, since they sit in damp soil. More garden designs are on painted rock garden ideas, and full flower designs on flower rock painting.
Sealing spring rocks for rain
- Let the paint cure. Leave rocks a full day before sealing so paint is dry through.
- Spray, do not brush, the first coat. A brush can drag water-based paint pen lines.
- Two or three light coats. Several thin coats hold up better than one heavy one.
- Seal the bottom too for rocks that sit on damp soil.
- Reseal each spring if a rock lives outside year round.

Questions people ask
What are some creative art ideas for spring?
Painted rock flowers for a garden bed, seed marker stones lettered with what you planted, rain cloud rocks, bee and ladybug rocks, Easter egg rocks, pressed flower art, and a spring nature hunt that ends with painting what you found. Pastel paint markers on rocks, eggs and paper suit the season.
What kind of paint will stick to spring garden rocks?
Acrylic paint and acrylic paint pens stick to clean, dry stone, best on a smooth rock with a base coat. Water-based pigment paint pens bond well to porous stone. Seal with clear spray so rain and handling do not wear the paint, and look for outdoor-rated acrylic for rocks that stay outside.
What flowers are easiest to paint on rocks?
Daisies, tulips and simple five-petal flowers. A daisy is a ring of white ovals around a yellow center; a tulip is a cup shape on a stem with two leaves; a five-petal flower is five dots around a center dot. All three work with one medium and one fine tip.
