Short answer

Paint a green shamrock (three heart-shaped leaves and a curved stem) on a natural or white stone, a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, or a lucky message in white on green. You need two or three greens, gold or yellow, black and white. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip fills the leaves; an extra fine tip adds outlines, coins and lettering.

A palette of greens

St Patrick’s Day rocks look richer with more than one green. Use a dark green for outlines and backgrounds, a mid green for shamrock leaves, and a light green or lime for highlights and veins. Gold or yellow adds the coins and buckles, white the lettering. Our green paint markers page covers green shades, and gold paint markers metallics for coins.

A leprechaun rock hunt

  1. Paint the treasure

Paint ten to twenty small rocks: gold coin rocks (solid gold or yellow with a shamrock), shamrocks and a few rainbows.

  2. Make one prize rock

Paint a bigger pot of gold rock. Whoever finds it gets a small prize.

  3. Seal and dry

Seal the rocks so dew and damp grass do not lift the paint.

  4. Hide them

Hide rocks around a garden or yard you have permission to use, at kid eye level.

  5. Leave leprechaun clues

Tiny green footprints in chalk, or notes, lead toward the pot of gold rock.

Count the rocks you hide so none are left behind, and keep hunts to your own yard, a school or a park where it is allowed. The National Parks Conservation Association notes that leaving painted rocks in national parks breaks leave-no-trace rules (NPCA). More hunt and game ideas are on fun rock painting ideas.

Why green, and why Saint Patrick was once blue

Saint Patrick’s Day falls on 17 March, the traditional date of the saint’s death. Green ribbons and shamrocks have been worn on the day since at least the 1680s, and legend says Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, a story first recorded in writing in 1726. Blue came from the Order of St Patrick, founded in 1783, which adopted blue as its color (Wikipedia). If you want something different, paint a St Patrick’s blue rock with a white shamrock.

Questions people ask

What is the original color of St. Patty’s Day?

Blue is often called the original color. The Order of St Patrick, an Anglo-Irish order of chivalry founded in 1783, adopted blue, which is how blue came to be associated with Saint Patrick. Green ribbons and shamrocks, though, have been worn on the day since at least the 1680s, and green is the color most people use today.

What’s with the painted rocks?

Painted rocks are a simple craft that grew into a community habit: people paint stones with pictures or kind messages and leave them in public places for others to find. The Kindness Rocks Project, started in 2015, helped popularize it. Families also paint rocks as decorations, gifts and games.

What kind of paint do you use to paint rocks?

Water-based acrylic: acrylic craft paint for base coats and acrylic or pigment paint pens for details and lettering. Paint pens make clean lines and dots on small stones. Seal finished rocks with a clear spray, especially if they will be hidden outside.

How do you paint a shamrock on a rock?

Paint three heart shapes with their points meeting in the middle, one pointing up and two out to the sides, in medium green. Add a curved stem from the center down. When dry, outline the leaves in dark green or black and add a light green line down the middle of each leaf.
