Short answer

Pick a long oval rock. Base coat it blue for water, or paint the whole stone as the fish. Paint an oval body with a triangle tail at one end, add a curved gill line, a white eye with a black pupil, and a few bubbles. A medium 1.8 to 2.5 mm tip fills the body; an extra fine 0.7 mm tip adds scales, fins and the eye.

Two ways to paint a fish rock

There are two approaches, and the rock decides which one to use:

Wash the rock and let it dry overnight before any paint goes on. For base coats, brushed acrylic craft paint is faster than markers; see acrylic paint for rock painting.

Fish colors, scales and tips

Scales: draw rows of small C or U shapes, overlapping like roof tiles, starting behind the gill. Keep them a shade darker than the body, or white on a dark fish, and stop before the tail so the tail reads as a separate shape. Bubbles: three dots in a rising line, getting smaller, read better than many random dots.

Orange is the color fish rocks use most. The orange paint marker guide compares water-based and oil-based oranges, and white for koi and bubbles is covered in white paint markers.

Fish rock projects

Fish in art, then and now

Fish are an old subject. Archaeologists call human-made markings on natural rock surfaces rock art (Wikipedia), and modern painters keep coming back to fish: Paul Klee’s 1925 painting Fish Magic, held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, scratches fish, plants and figures into a dark painted ground (Wikipedia). A dark base with bright fish on top is the same idea on a rock. For more animals, see rock painting animals.

Questions people ask

How do I paint rocks at home?

Wash smooth rocks and let them dry overnight, brush on an acrylic base coat, then draw the design with water-based paint pens, big shapes first and details last, letting each layer dry. Seal finished rocks with two or three light coats of clear spray, outdoors or by an open window.

Who is the artist known for painting fish?

Many artists have painted fish, so there is no single answer. One well-known example is Paul Klee’s Fish Magic from 1925, a dark, dreamlike painting of fish, plants and figures held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Koi and goldfish are also popular subjects for painters and rock painters today.

What is painted rock art called?

Ancient painting on rock is called rock art. A painted image on rock is usually called a pictograph and a carved or pecked one a petroglyph. Modern painted rocks left for others to find are usually called kindness rocks.

How to paint a rock to look like a fish?

Choose a long, flat oval stone. Paint the whole rock orange or yellow, then paint a triangle tail on one narrow end, a curved line behind the head for the gill, a round white eye with a black pupil near the other end, and rows of small curved scales across the body. Add a fin on top and bottom, and the stone reads as a fish from any angle.
