Short answer

The classic is a turkey: a round brown body on a palm-size rock with a fan of red, orange and yellow feathers behind it, two eyes, a yellow beak and a red wattle. Medium tips paint the feathers and body; an extra fine tip adds eyes and feather lines. For gratitude rocks, letter thankful or a guest’s name in a fine tip on an autumn base coat.

Brown paint pens are less common in small sets, so check your set or see brown paint markers. A brown acrylic craft paint base coat with a brush works just as well for turkey bodies.

Painting rocks with a group

  1. Prep the day before

Wash rocks, dry overnight, and base coat any dark stones white.

  2. Set up stations

Cover the table, put out medium tips for shapes and a few extra fine tips for faces.

  3. Shake and prime pens

Prime each paint pen on scrap so kids do not get a blob on the first stroke.

  4. Dry between colors

Line finished rocks up to dry while the next one starts.

  5. Seal later

Spray sealer outside after the guests leave, once the paint is fully dry.

Step-by-step basics are in how to do rock painting, and sealing in how to seal painted rocks. If you hide your rocks afterward, check local rules: the National Parks Conservation Association reports national park sites asking visitors not to leave painted rocks. The Kindness Rocks Project also asks that outdoor rocks skip googly eyes and stickers (project guidelines).

Questions people ask

What do painted rocks symbolize?

Most painted rocks are small acts of kindness: a picture or message left for someone else to find, or given as a gift. At Thanksgiving they often carry thanks, with a word, a name or a family member’s handprint. The Kindness Rocks Project, which spread the idea of leaving rocks for strangers, began in 2015, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

How do I paint rocks at home?

Wash smooth rocks and let them dry overnight, base coat with acrylic craft paint if the stone is dark, then draw the design with water-based paint pens, big shapes first and details last, letting each layer dry. Finish with two or three light coats of clear spray sealer in a ventilated spot.

Can modge podge be used on rocks?

Yes. Mod Podge makes an outdoor formula and a clear acrylic sealer spray that painters use on rocks. Brushing a sealer over water-based paint pen can smear it, so let the paint dry overnight or spray the first coat. Rocks used as table decor indoors need less protection than garden rocks.

What is it called when you paint rocks and hide them?

Usually kindness rocks or rock hunting. People paint stones, often with a hashtag or group name on the back, and hide them in public places for others to find, photograph and re-hide. Check local rules first: national park sites have asked visitors not to leave painted rocks, citing leave-no-trace principles.

Where can I buy painted stones for a garden?

Craft fairs, garden centers and handmade marketplaces such as Etsy sell hand-painted garden stones, and some local artists take custom orders. Painting your own costs only rocks, a few paint pens and a sealer, and a Thanksgiving afternoon is a good time to make a garden set together.
