Kindness rock painting ideas

Kindness rock painting ideas start with the message: a kindness rock is a stone painted with a short, upbeat message and left for a stranger to find. The message is the point, so this page starts with the words: forty short messages sorted by mood, then designs that frame them, then how to run a kindness rock project with a class or a group.

Short answer

Paint a short message of one to four words, such as you matter, be kind or keep going, on a smooth stone in a light color over a dark base (or the reverse), add a simple heart, sun or rainbow, and seal it. Write #TheKindnessRocksProject on the back, skip googly eyes and stickers, and leave it where people walk, with permission.

Kindness rock messages, sorted by mood

Short beats clever. One to four words can be big enough to read from standing height, and a finder takes them in at a glance.

How to letter kindness rocks so they read

The Kindness Rocks Project guidelines

The Kindness Rocks Project asks painters to write #TheKindnessRocksProject on the back so finders can share where the rock turned up, to leave off stickers and googly eyes because they can harm animals, to top coat every rock with a clear sealant, and to get permission before placing rocks (project guidelines). The project began in 2015, when founder Megan Murphy left five rocks with short phrases on Cape Cod beaches, and both the project and most local groups tell members not to leave rocks in national parks (National Parks Conservation Association).

Kindness rocks with a class or group

  1. Collect and wash stones

Buy a bag of smooth stones or collect them where that is allowed. Wash and dry them overnight.

  2. Pre-paint base coats

An adult paints base coats the day before, in four or five colors, so the session goes straight to messages.

  3. Brainstorm messages

Each person picks one message from a list on the board, or writes their own in pencil first.

  4. Letter and decorate

Fine tips for words, medium tips for hearts, suns and rainbows. Share fine tips and remind everyone to press lightly.

  5. Dry, then seal

Let rocks dry fully. An adult sprays two or three light coats of clear sealer outdoors.

  6. Plan where they go

Choose places with permission: a school garden, a library step, a hospital garden, a neighborhood walking route.

A kindness rock garden, where a group leaves a collection of message rocks in one bed with a sign inviting people to take one and leave one, keeps rocks out of mowers and wild areas. More on the craft side is in the beginner guide to painted rocks.

Questions people ask

Why do people paint rocks?

For fun, for relaxation and to give something away. Painting a rock is cheap, quick and needs little skill, and a painted rock can become a gift, a garden decoration or a kindness rock left for a stranger. Many people paint them with kids, in classes or with community groups that organize hunts.

What is a kindness rock?

A rock painted with an encouraging message or picture and left in a public place for someone to find. The Kindness Rocks Project, which Megan Murphy started in 2015 by leaving five message rocks on Cape Cod beaches, popularized the idea and asks painters to write #TheKindnessRocksProject on the back so finders can share photos.

Where should you not leave kindness rocks?

Not in national parks or other protected natural areas, where leaving painted rocks breaks leave-no-trace rules; not on private property without permission; not where a mower or trimmer could hit them; and not in rivers, on beaches at the tide line or in places where they could harm wildlife.
