Strawberry rock painting

Strawberry painted rocks do double duty: they are one of the easiest designs for beginners, and gardeners paint them as decoys to put in the strawberry patch before the real berries ripen. Here is how to paint both kinds, and what the garden trick can and cannot do.

Short answer

Pick a rounded triangle or heart-shaped rock. Paint it bright red, add a green leafy cap at the wide end, then dot small yellow teardrop seeds in loose rows. For garden decoys, keep them realistic and berry-sized and set them out before the fruit ripens. Seal outdoor rocks well.

Strawberry painted rocks as garden decoys

The idea is simple. The University of Illinois Extension suggests painting rocks to look like strawberries and placing them in the patch while berries develop and ripen, as a natural deterrent for birds: they try to eat the rocks instead of the fruit. It recommends flat rocks or rocks shaped like strawberries, with craft paint in green for the leaves, red for the flesh and yellow for the achenes, the little seed-like dots (Illinois Extension).

A few practical notes if you try it:

How to paint a realistic strawberry rock

  1. Choose the rock

A smooth stone about the size of a large strawberry, rounded at the top and narrowing to a point.

  2. Paint it red

Two coats of bright red acrylic, drying between coats. A slightly darker red near the point adds depth.

  3. Add the cap

Paint a green star of pointed leaves at the wide end, with a short stem.

  4. Dot the seeds

Small yellow teardrops in loose, staggered rows, points toward the cap. An extra fine tip keeps them small.

  5. Highlight and seal

A tiny white dot or two for shine, then several light coats of clear gloss spray for outdoor use.

Rock painting sets for strawberry projects

A strawberry rock needs only three colors, so you do not need a big kit. A medium red, a medium green and an extra fine yellow cover it. If you are painting with a group of kids, a rock painting set with rocks, paints and brushes included saves gathering supplies; compare options on rock painting kits.

Painted rocks and kindness

Outside the garden, most painted rocks are kindness rocks, left for strangers to find. The Kindness Rocks Project asks painters to write its hashtag on the back, skip stickers and googly eyes, seal rocks with a non-toxic clear top coat, and get permission before leaving rocks anywhere (project guidelines). A strawberry with a short message such as “berry nice to meet you” makes a cheerful one.

Questions people ask

What are some activities for painting rocks?

Paint strawberry decoys for the garden, make a set of story stones, letter kindness rocks to leave for neighbors, paint place cards for a party, make a tic-tac-toe set, or paint a family of pet rocks. A rock painting set or kit gives kids everything for one session.

Where is rock painting?

Anywhere: it is a craft you can do at a kitchen table, and painted rocks turn up in gardens, parks and neighborhoods worldwide. The Kindness Rocks Project, one of the best known groups, says its founder finds her rocks along the shores of Cape Cod. Always get permission before leaving rocks in a public place.

What’s with the painted rocks?

Most painted rocks you find are kindness rocks: small painted stones with a picture or message, left for strangers to find and enjoy. In vegetable gardens, red painted rocks in a strawberry patch are something else: decoys meant to discourage birds from pecking the fruit.

How to paint rocks to look like strawberries?

Choose a rock shaped like a berry, rounded at the top and narrowing to a point. Paint it red in two coats, paint a green cap of pointed leaves at the wide end, then add small yellow teardrop seeds in staggered rows. The University of Illinois Extension suggests flat or strawberry-shaped rocks and craft paint in green, red and yellow.

Do rocks painted like strawberries work?

They may help, but they are not guaranteed. The University of Illinois Extension describes strawberry painted rocks as a natural bird deterrent: birds try the rocks instead of the developing berries. It is a cheap, low-risk idea rather than a guarantee, so treat painted decoys as one tool alongside netting.
