Pink paint marker guide

Pink covers a wide range, from soft blush to a hot pink paint pen that almost glows. The shade you want decides the marker: pastels for illustration and kawaii art, hot pinks and neons for signs and black paper, broad pinks for murals. Here is how to pick, and how to make pink cover.

Pink paint marker guide: illustration of an acrylic paint marker drawing a bold stroke

Short answer

For a hot pink paint pen that stands out on signs and dark paper, choose a fluorescent or shock pink paint marker, such as a broad Montana Shock Pink for big work or a Krink K-60 pink for bold, drippy marks on smooth surfaces. For soft pink on paper and rocks, a water-based pastel set such as Posca’s PC-5M pastels. Paint over white for the brightest result, and keep neon pink out of sunlight.

Hot pink paint pen: getting the glow

More on fluorescent colors is on neon paint markers.

Pink fades: plan for it

Pink is one of the colors most prone to fading, especially fluorescent pinks. Liquitex notes that fluorescent pigments are naturally less lightfast than standard colors (Liquitex). Keep pink artwork out of direct sun, use standard rather than neon pinks for outdoor rocks and signs, and expect outdoor pink to need touching up.

Soft pink for art and rocks

For cheeks on kawaii faces, cherry blossoms, flamingos and pastel palettes, a pastel pink paint marker is the everyday choice. Pastel pink is light, so on dark rocks paint a white base first or plan two coats. More soft colors are on pastel paint markers, and designs that use them on cute rock painting ideas and aesthetic rock painting ideas.

Making your own pinks

  1. Red plus white

The basic pink. More white gives blush; less gives rose.

  2. Magenta plus white

A cooler, brighter pink than red and white.

  3. Layer, then blend

Lay white, let it dry, then a thin red or magenta pass, or blend the two while wet.

  4. Clean the tip

Wipe a white tip on scrap after touching red, or it will draw pink for a while.

Reds are compared on red paint markers, whites on white paint markers, and metallic pinks on metallic paint markers. For refillable broad pinks, see Montana paint markers.

Next on the color wheel: purple paint markers.

Questions people ask

What is pink marker paint for?

In art and crafts, pink paint markers are for lettering, cards, kawaii and illustration, rock painting, signs and party decor. Pink spray marking paint is also sold for job sites, but pink is not one of the seven utility colors Virginia 811 lists in the APWA code, so a pink mark is not a buried-line mark under that code; ask whoever made it.

Is a pink paint pen the same as a pink paint marker?

No meaningful one. Both names describe a marker filled with opaque paint, water-based acrylic or oil-based, rather than dye ink, and sellers use them interchangeably. The differences that matter are the paint type, the tip size, and whether the pen is pump action or direct ink.

How much is a pink paint pen?

It varies widely and changes often, so we do not list prices. Single budget pens and large budget sets cost the least per pen; brand-name pump markers such as Posca, and artist and refillable markers such as Liquitex, Molotow and Montana, cost more, and broad and jumbo tips cost more than fine ones. Multipacks usually lower the per-pen cost.
