Montana acrylic marker guide

Montana Cans is a German spray paint maker, and its Acrylic markers carry the same graffiti-and-mural thinking: water-based acrylic paint, tips from a 0.7 mm line to a 50 mm stripe, and bodies you can refill. Here is what Montana publishes about them and how to choose a size.

Short answer

Montana Acrylic markers are refillable, pump-style paint markers filled with water-based acrylic paint that Montana says is weatherproof once dry. They come in 0.7 mm, 2 mm, 15 mm, 30 mm and 50 mm tips. Montana’s sheet lists touch dry in minutes, overpaintable after about an hour, fully cured after six hours, and heat resistance up to 80 °C. Every Montana Acrylic marker can be refilled, and empty markers are sold separately.

Montana Acrylic marker tips and paint fill, per Montana’s technical sheet

TipPaint fill, standard colorsBest for
0.7 mm5 gOutlines, small lettering, details
2 mm8 gEveryday drawing, lettering, rocks
15 mm45 gMurals, signs, big lettering, fills
30 mm45 gWide stripes and fills on walls
50 mm45 gThe widest strokes, large walls

Montana’s technical information page lists these five tips and their paint fills; metallic versions hold less (3 g in the 0.7 mm, 5 g in the 2 mm, 30 g in the wide sizes). On Amazon, the 2 mm and 15 mm sizes are the easiest to find in single colors.

All figures are Montana’s (Montana technical information), which it describes as non-binding, so run your own test on the surface you plan to paint.

Montana acrylic marker 15mm

The 15 mm is the Montana most people mean. It carries 45 g of paint and lays a stripe about as wide as a thumb, so it covers lettering, sign backgrounds and mural fills quickly. Montana sells replacement 15 mm nibs and a clear gloss varnish marker in the same body. For other wide options, see thick paint markers, and for walls, paint markers for walls.

Montana acrylic empty refillable paint marker

Montana says every Acrylic marker can be refilled with 25 ml or 180 ml Acrylic refill paint, that tips can be replaced, and that empty markers are sold separately (Montana refill guide). The refill steps it gives:

  1. Open the marker

Unscrew the body to the left and separate the upper part that holds the tip.

  2. Remove the valve

Carefully work the valve system out with a fingernail or palette knife.

  3. Fill

Slowly squeeze in the Acrylic paint you want. Leave the mixing balls inside and do not fill completely.

  4. Reassemble

Press the valve back in firmly and screw the marker closed to the right.

  5. Prime

Pump the tip until paint flows, then test on scrap.

Empty markers let you mix custom colors or keep a big refill bottle of white or black on hand. Other refillable systems are compared on refillable paint pens.

Sarah Renae Clark rated Posca highest overall in her pump-action marker review; her Montana entry had no results at the time we checked, so we have no independent performance data for Montana to report. Montana’s strength on paper is the spec sheet and the refill system. For the full field, see best acrylic markers and graffiti markers.

Questions people ask

Which brand of acrylic markers is considered the best?

There is no single best. In Sarah Renae Clark’s 2026 comparison of pump-action markers, Posca had the highest score overall. Montana and Molotow are popular with muralists and graffiti artists because they offer very wide tips, refill paint and empty markers. Choose by job: Posca for everyday art, Montana or Molotow for big walls and refilling.

Is there a difference between acrylic markers and acrylic paint markers?

Usually no: both names describe markers filled with acrylic paint. Some sellers use acrylic marker for any opaque paint pen, including water-based pigment markers that the maker does not call acrylic. Check the listing for the paint base: water-based acrylic, water-based pigment, or oil-based.

Which are the best acrylic markers?

For general art on paper, rocks and wood, Posca is the benchmark in independent testing. For refillable markers and very wide tips, Montana Acrylic and Molotow ONE4ALL are the main choices. For budget multi-color sets, brands like Artistro and Arrtx are common. Our best acrylic markers guide compares them.

What are high quality acrylic markers?

Signs of quality are a published spec sheet, consistent opaque coverage, a valve or pump that does not flood, replaceable tips, and refill paint. Montana publishes drying times, heat resistance and gloss for its Acrylic markers, which is more than many budget brands share.

What are acrylic paint markers good for?

Opaque color on almost any surface: paper, canvas, wood, stone, walls, sneakers, glass and plastic decor. Wide acrylic markers like Montana’s 15 mm suit murals, signs and lettering, while 0.7 and 2 mm tips suit detail and outlines.
