Short answer
For posters, murals and big canvases, use a water-based acrylic marker with an 8 to 15 mm tip, such as the Posca PC-17K (15 mm) or PC-8K (8 mm chisel), or a 15 mm jumbo set. For crates, lumber and metal, use a broad oil-based marker such as the Uni Paint PX-30 (8 mm). Prime wide tips fully before starting, and keep strokes moving to avoid streaks.

Large paint markers by tip width
| Tip | Width | Examples | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad bullet | About 4.5 to 5.5 mm | Posca PC-7M | Bold lines, lettering, kids’ posters |
| Broad chisel | About 8 mm | Posca PC-8K, Uni Paint PX-30 | Headlines, fills, lumber and crate marking |
| Adjustable wide | About 4 to 8 mm | Molotow ONE4ALL 4-8 mm | Murals, canvas, thick and thin strokes |
| Jumbo | 15 mm | Posca PC-17K, Montana 15 mm, Artistro jumbo set | Big letters, backgrounds, murals |
Widths are the makers’ figures as given in listings. The tip size chart shows every width side by side, and Posca’s full ladder of sizes is on Posca marker sizes.
Jumbo paint markers for posters and murals
The 15 mm class is the widest common paint marker. Posca’s PC-17K is a rectangular extra broad 15 mm tip, sold singly and as an eight color set. Montana makes a 15 mm acrylic marker and lists widths up to 50 mm on its technical sheet, with a matte finish that it says is weatherproof once dry (Montana). Artistro sells a 20 color jumbo set with 15 mm tips for murals and posters, per its listing.
Jumbo markers hold a lot of paint and feed it fast. Prime them on scrap card, not on the poster, and expect the first stroke after priming to be heavy.
Large paint pens with chisel tips
An 8 mm chisel is the most versatile thick tip: the flat edge draws a broad stroke, the corner draws a thin line, and turning the pen mid-stroke gives calligraphic letters. Posca’s PC-8K comes in an 8 mm chisel; for oil-based work, the Uni Paint PX-30 is listed with an 8 mm broad line in black, white, yellow, red, blue, gold and silver. For graffiti-style lettering, see graffiti markers.
Thick paint pens for crates, lumber and metal
Workshops, warehouses and building sites need marks that survive weather and handling. Broad oil-based markers such as the PX-30 are made for that: Uni’s PX-20 listing describes its oil-based paint as withstanding weather, heat and abrasion, and the PX-30 is the broad version. White and yellow show best on lumber and dark steel. Ventilate when using solvent markers indoors. Brand details: Uni Paint markers.
How to get smooth strokes from a wide tip
- Shake and prime fully
Shake for longer than you would a fine pen, then press the tip on scrap until the whole width is wet. A half-wet chisel streaks.
- Keep moving
Pull strokes at a steady speed. Stopping mid-stroke leaves a pool of paint.
- Overlap while wet
For fills, overlap each stroke by a third while the last one is still wet, all in the same direction.
- Second coat dry
For solid color on dark grounds, let the first coat dry fully, then go over it crosswise.
- Clean the tip
Wipe wide tips often; they pick up color from the layer underneath.
Thick markers on canvas and walls
Wide markers are fast for canvas backgrounds and big shapes; add detail on top with medium and fine pens once dry. Liquitex sells its Professional markers in wide nibs as well as 2 mm, for artists who want artist-grade paint in a thick marker. More on paint markers for canvas and, for drawing on painted walls, paint pens for walls. Molotow’s wide refillable markers are covered on Molotow ONE4ALL.

Questions people ask
What is the best marker for drawing on posters?
A thick water-based acrylic paint marker, 8 to 15 mm, for headlines and fills, plus a medium 2 mm marker for smaller text. Paint markers are opaque, so they stay bright on colored poster board, and water-based ones do not smell like solvent markers. Posca’s PC-8K and PC-17K and 15 mm jumbo sets are common choices.
Can I use acrylic markers on canvas?
Yes, on primed canvas or over dry acrylic paint. Wide 8 to 15 mm markers fill backgrounds and big shapes quickly, and medium and fine markers add detail on top. Let each layer dry, and spray the first varnish coat so a brush does not drag the marker paint.
Does Home Depot carry paint pens?
Yes. The Home Depot sells paint pens, including Sharpie paint markers, and hardware stores mostly stock oil-based markers in medium and broad tips for marking lumber, metal and equipment. Stock varies by store. Wide water-based art markers such as Posca and jumbo acrylic sets are easier to find at art suppliers and online.
What’s the difference between acrylic and watercolor markers?
Acrylic markers hold opaque acrylic paint that sits on top of the surface, covers dark colors and dries water resistant on porous surfaces. Watercolor markers hold transparent, water-soluble ink that you can blend and wash out with a wet brush, like watercolor paint. Thick acrylic markers make bold, flat color; watercolor markers make soft washes on paper.
What is the largest set of markers?
Sets keep getting bigger: acrylic paint marker sets of 120 colors are common, and we have checked Amazon listings for sets of 240 and 288 acrylic paint markers from languo and Guangna. Huge sets are mostly brush tip pens, not thick markers. Wide 8 to 15 mm markers are usually sold singly or in sets of 8 to 20.
