Short answer
Store acrylic paint markers with the caps pressed on firmly, away from heat and sun. Posca says its markers can be kept in any position as long as the cap is on firmly, except its brush pen, which it recommends storing horizontally. For organizing, a slotted marker case works for 50 to 120 pens; smaller collections fit a cased set or a desk tray sorted by color and tip.
How to store acrylic paint markers
Paint marker storage rules, based in part on Posca’s FAQ
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Cap firmly after every use | An open or loose cap is the main reason paint markers dry out. |
| Any position for most pump markers | Posca says its markers can be kept in any position as long as the cap is on firmly. |
| Brush pens flat | Posca recommends storing its brush pen horizontally. |
| Room temperature, no sun | Heat thickens paint and can push it into the cap; cold makes it sluggish. |
| Shake before use after storage | Pigment settles; shaking the mixing ball remixes it. |
| Keep spare tips with the set | Replacement nibs are easy to lose and slow to find later. |
Posca’s storage notes come from its FAQ. If a stored marker will not flow, paint pen not working covers re-priming and soaking tips.
Acrylic marker organizer options
Acrylic pen organizer types
| Option | Holds | Best for |

| Slotted zip case | About 60 to 120 markers, per typical listings | A growing collection that moves around |
| Desk tray or caddy | A few dozen, upright or flat | A fixed desk where you work daily |
| Drawer unit | Hundreds, flat in drawers | Large studios; sort one drawer per color family |
| Clear jars by color | A handful per jar | Quick grabbing at a craft table |
How to organize a paint marker collection
- By color family first. Most people look for color before tip size. Sort reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, purples, neutrals, then metallics and neons.
- Then by tip. Inside each color, keep fine to broad in order. Compare widths on the tip size chart.
- Swatch card. Paint a stripe of every marker on a card, labeled with the code, and keep it in the case lid. Cap colors rarely match the paint exactly.
- Label dual tips. Dual tip pens with two colors per pen are easy to misplace; a swatch of both ends saves time. See dual tip acrylic paint markers.
- Separate “in use”. A small cup for the ten markers on the current project keeps the main case tidy.
Upright or flat?
For most pump-action markers it does not matter much, according to Posca, as long as the cap is on firmly. Many artists still store pump markers flat so paint stays evenly mixed along the barrel, and store brush tips flat as Posca advises. Direct-ink markers vary by brand, so follow the maker’s note if there is one; when in doubt, flat is the safe choice.

Keeping stored markers working
- Use them. Markers that sit for months are the ones that clog. Rotate colors through projects.
- Wipe the tip before capping if it picked up another color, so it does not dry muddy.
- Do not store in a hot car or a sunny windowsill.
- Check caps for cracks; a cracked cap dries a marker within days.

Questions people ask
How should you store acrylic paint markers?
Cap them firmly after every use and keep them at room temperature, out of direct sun and away from heaters. Posca says its markers can be stored in any position as long as the cap is firmly on, and recommends storing its brush pen horizontally. Shake and prime any marker that has sat for a while before use.
Is acrylic marker waterproof?
Water-based acrylic markers are water resistant once dry on porous surfaces such as paper, wood, canvas and stone. On smooth surfaces such as glass, metal and plastic they can wash or scratch off unless sealed. For outdoor or washable items, seal the work or use an oil-based paint marker.
Which acrylic pens are worth keeping in an organizer?
In Sarah Renae Clark’s 2026 comparison, Posca scored highest overall among pump-action acrylic paint markers, with Pilot Pintor a close second. Budget sets from brands such as Arrtx, Tooli-Art and Kingart give many more colors per dollar; the best one depends on whether you need proven coverage or a wide color range.
