Short answer
Draw in this order: light pencil sketch, flat color with a medium or brush tip, a darker shade on one side for shadow, then a black outline and a white highlight once the color is dry. Start with round, simple subjects such as a cat face, a mushroom, a cloud or a donut, and keep to three or four colors per drawing.
The four-step method for simple marker drawings
- Sketch lightly
Draw the shape in light pencil, using circles and ovals. Keep it big: easy drawings look best when they fill most of the space.
- Flat color
Fill each area with one color using a medium, chisel or brush tip. Work in one direction and keep the tip moving so the color stays even.
- One shadow
Pick one side as the shadow side and add a darker shade of the same color there, or a light gray over the color.
- Outline and highlight
When the color is dry, outline everything with a black fine tip, erase the pencil, and add a white dot or curve on the light side.
That last step is what makes simple marker art look finished. A white gel pen or a white paint marker adds highlights on top of alcohol or water-based color, which ordinary markers cannot do.
12 easy marker drawings
Cute and simple
- Cat face: a wide oval head, two triangle ears, two dot eyes set low, a tiny pink triangle nose, a W mouth and three whiskers each side. Color it orange with darker stripes on the forehead.
- Mushroom: a half circle cap on a short rectangle stem. Color the cap red and add white circles of different sizes. Shade under the cap with gray.
- Cloud with a face: three bumps on top and a flat bottom. Leave it white, shade the bottom edge light blue, and add two dot eyes, a smile and pink cheeks.
- Donut: a circle with a smaller circle in the middle, then a wavy frosting ring inside the outer edge. Tan dough, pink frosting, short sprinkle dashes in three colors.
Plants and nature
- Cactus in a pot: a tall rounded rectangle with two arms bent upward, in a trapezoid pot. Green cactus with a darker green stripe down one side, terracotta pot, tiny black spine marks.
- Rainbow: four arched bands, each a different color, with a cloud at each end so the arches start and stop cleanly.
- Sun and hills: a circle in the top corner, two overlapping hill curves at the bottom. Yellow sun, two greens for the hills, blue sky colored in short strokes.
- Tulip: a U shape with two pointed petals rising from it, a straight stem and two long leaves. Red or pink petals, darker at the base.
Objects and food
- Coffee cup: a rectangle that narrows at the bottom, a handle, and three wavy steam lines. Add a heart on the cup.
- Potion bottle: a round flask with a narrow neck and a cork. Color the liquid purple, add bubbles and a white shine stripe on the glass.
- Ice cream cone: a triangle cone with a crosshatch pattern and two scoops on top, a cherry on the top scoop.
- Watermelon slice: a half circle with a green rind, a thin white band, red flesh and black teardrop seeds.
Easy paint marker drawings on black paper
Paint markers are opaque, so light colors sit on top of black paper and glow. That makes simple drawings look dramatic with no shading at all:
Easy paint marker art ideas for black paper
| Drawing | Colors | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Moon and stars | Yellow, white | Medium for the moon, extra fine for stars |
| Neon flowers | Pink, orange, green, white | Medium for petals, extra fine for outlines |
| Line art face | White only | Extra fine 0.7 mm |
| Bubble letters | Any bright color plus white | Medium fill, white highlight |
| Galaxy planet | Blue, violet, white | Medium, then dots with extra fine |

Habits that make easy marker art look good
- Three or four colors: a limited palette looks deliberate. Pick one main color, one accent and black and white.
- Thick outline, thin details: outline the shape with a bolder line than the inside details.
- Leave white: on white paper, an unpainted gap is the brightest highlight you have.
- Let it dry: outlining wet color smears it. Wait a minute, longer for paint markers.
- Swatch first: marker caps rarely match the ink exactly. Test on the paper you will use.
- Right paper: marker paper for alcohol markers, smooth cardstock for water-based and paint markers, so ink does not feather.
Which markers for easy drawings
You do not need many. A starter kit is a color set plus a black and a white:
| Marker | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol markers | Smooth flat color, easy shadows | Bleed through paper; use a backing sheet |
| Water-based brush pens | Cheap, forgiving, lettering | Streaks if you go over wet areas |
| Acrylic paint markers | Black paper, layering light over dark | Need shaking and priming |
| Black fineliner or extra fine marker | Outlines and details | Let color dry first |

Questions people ask
How do I make my own markers?
The simplest way is to buy empty refillable markers and fill them with ink: alcohol ink for alcohol-style markers, or acrylic ink or thinned acrylic paint for paint markers, following the refill product’s instructions. You can also revive dried water-based markers by soaking the tip in a little water. Homemade markers will not match the flow of factory ones, so test on scrap paper first.
What are some creative things I can draw with markers when I’m bored?
A sheet of tiny stickers, your name in bubble letters, a food item with a face, a houseplant, a potion bottle collection, a pattern that fills the whole page, a doodle map of your room, a monster made from a random scribble, or the view from your window in only three colors. Setting a limit, such as one color or ten minutes, makes it more fun.
How to draw an easy boy with pencil?
Draw a circle for the head and a slightly wider rounded rectangle under it for the body. Add two small ovals for eyes about halfway down the face, a curved line for a smile, and a hair shape sitting on top of the circle like a cap. Draw two simple arms and two legs as rounded tubes, then go over the lines you like in marker and erase the pencil.
What kind of markers are good for drawing?
For bold, easy drawings, a set with a medium or brush tip for color and a black fineliner or extra fine marker for outlines. Alcohol markers give smooth flat color on marker paper; water-based brush pens are cheap and forgiving; paint markers cover dark paper and let you add white highlights on top. Most beginners do well with one color set plus a black and a white pen.
What to draw 100 ideas?
Make lists by theme so you never run out: 20 foods, 20 animals, 20 plants, 20 objects around the house and 20 things from the outdoors, such as clouds, rainbows, moons and mountains. Draw one a day, or fill a page with ten small ones. The marker drawing ideas page on this site has 40 more prompts sorted by marker type.
