Short answer

Pick a liquid chalk marker with a jumbo 10 to 15 mm tip for big window lettering and a 1 to 6 mm tip for detail. On clean glass the ink sits on top and wipes off with a damp cloth or glass cleaner. Avoid scratched or etched panes, rubber seals and window tint film, and do not leave designs baking in the sun for months.

White window chalk marker tips

White is the most used color on glass because it reads against the dark interior of a car or shop. Shake it longer than you think: white pigment settles. Two thin passes look more even than one heavy stroke, and outlining colored letters in white makes them pop from the street.

How to draw on windows with chalk markers

  1. Clean the glass

Wipe with glass cleaner and let it dry; grease and dust make ink bead and streak.

  2. Shake and prime

Shake with the cap on, then press the tip on a scrap until ink flows evenly.

  3. Plan from outside

Tape a printed design to the inside of the glass and trace it from the outside, or work in mirror image from inside.

  4. Outline, then fill

Outline shapes with a fine tip and fill with a jumbo, letting each color dry before overlapping.

  5. Keep it off seals and tint

Stop short of rubber seals, painted frames and tint film, where ink can soak in.

How to get chalk marker off windows

Window chalk marker or window paint marker?

Chalk markers are for designs you will remove in days or weeks. For art that should survive rain and cleaning, use a paint marker made for glass: see window paint markers and glass paint markers. For chalkboards and signs, see chalk markers, and for Sharpie’s version, Sharpie chalk markers.

Questions people ask

Are chalk markers ok to use on Windows?

Yes, on smooth glass they are one of the easiest things to use, because the ink sits on the surface and wipes off. Chalkola says its chalk markers go on any non-porous glass and do not damage glass or automotive paint. Keep them off scratched or etched glass, rubber seals, painted frames and window tint film, where ink can settle in.

Do chalk pens come off windows?

Yes. On clean, smooth glass, chalk pen ink wipes off with a damp cloth or glass cleaner. Chalkola says its markers leave no residue on glass. Older designs, or ink in scratches, may need more work: for dried-on marks it suggests a magic eraser, ammonia-free glass cleaner, white vinegar or a drop of rubbing alcohol.

Will chalk markers stay on glass?

Once dry, liquid chalk is smudge resistant and stays put through normal handling, dry weather and the odd brush of a hand, which is why shops use it for window displays. Water, rain and condensation can soften or streak it over time, especially on outside surfaces, so outdoor designs may need touch ups.

How to get chalk marker off your window?

Spray or wipe with water, let it soften for a minute, then wipe with a cloth or paper towel. Follow with glass cleaner for any haze. For stubborn spots, Chalkola suggests a magic eraser, white vinegar or a drop of rubbing alcohol on a cloth. A plastic scraper helps on thick ink; avoid metal blades on coated or tinted glass.

Will liquid chalk come off windows?

Yes, from clean glass it comes off with water and a cloth; that is what it is made for. Trouble spots are scratches and old, weathered panes: Posca warns that on a very old pane that has become porous, pigments can become encrusted, and the same caution applies to chalk ink. Test a corner on old glass.
