Brown paint marker picks

Brown is the color most marker sets skimp on, but it is the one you need for wood grain, tree trunks, animal fur, turkeys and touch-ups on furniture. Here are the brown paint pens worth knowing, water based and oil based, and how to get more browns from the colors you already own.

Short answer

For art on paper, wood and rocks, a water-based Posca brown (the PC-3M fine in dark brown, or the broad PC-7M) gives opaque, matte color. For glass, metal, plastic and outdoor labels, a Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Marker in brown, in fine or medium point, grips slick surfaces. Need several browns? An earth tone set or mixing red, yellow and a little black or blue gets you the rest.

Paint markers dry fast, so mix by dabbing tips onto a tile and painting with a small brush, or layer one color over another once dry. Method details are in how to blend acrylic markers. Neighboring color pages: orange paint markers and black paint markers.

Where to buy brown paint pens

Single browns are easiest to find from brands that sell open stock, such as Posca and Sharpie oil-based. Craft stores also carry paint pens: Hobby Lobby’s paint markers category lists acrylic paint markers including dual tip sets. Big budget sets often include one or two browns; check the color chart before you buy. For every paint pen type, see paint markers.

Questions people ask

What colors make brown with markers?

Brown is a mix of complementary colors: red and green, blue and orange, or yellow and purple, or red plus yellow with a little black or blue. With paint markers, layer or wet-blend orange and a touch of blue or black on a palette and paint it on, or build brown by layering a translucent color over another once dry. A dedicated brown pen is far quicker.

What’s the difference between paint markers and alcohol markers?

Paint markers lay opaque paint, water-based acrylic, pigment or oil based, that covers what is underneath and works on dark and non-paper surfaces. Alcohol markers lay translucent dye ink that blends smoothly on marker paper but will not show on dark surfaces and bleeds through thin paper. Brown alcohol markers shade skin and fur; brown paint markers cover wood and rock.

Does Hobby Lobby sell acrylic paint pens?

Yes. Hobby Lobby’s website has a paint markers category listing acrylic paint markers, including dual tip acrylic sets, single dual tip markers, metallic and glitter versions. Stock varies by store, so check online or call before you go.

What are the best paint marker pens?

For art on paper, rocks and wood, Posca scored highest overall in Sarah Renae Clark’s pump-action comparison. For metal, glass and outdoor marking, oil-based markers such as Sharpie oil-based or Uni Paint PX-20. For brown specifically, check that the brand sells brown as a single pen, since many sets leave it out.

How much is a paint pen?

Prices vary a lot by brand, size and pack, from inexpensive singles in big budget sets to premium wide markers. We do not list prices because they change daily on Amazon and in stores. The best value per pen usually comes from multipacks of one color you use often.
