How to remove chalk marker

Liquid chalk marker is made to be erased, but only from the right surfaces. On glass and sealed boards it wipes away; on porous chalkboards it can leave a ghost of last week’s menu. Here is how to erase chalk markers cleanly, fix ghosting, and get chalk marker out of clothes.

Short answer

On glass, mirrors, whiteboards and non-porous chalkboards, wipe with a damp cloth. For dried or stubborn marks, Chalkola suggests a magic eraser, ammonia-free glass cleaner, white vinegar or a drop of rubbing alcohol on a cloth. On porous surfaces such as wood, paper or painted walls, chalk marker soaks in and may not come out fully; season porous boards before use to prevent it.

First, know your surface

Everything depends on whether the surface is porous. Chalkola says its liquid chalk markers work on non-porous whiteboards, glass, non-porous chalkboards, metals, ceramics, plastics and vinyl, and wipe off them; on porous surfaces such as concrete, paper, wood and painted surfaces, they still write but will not wipe off (Chalkola FAQ).

How to erase chalk marker from non-porous surfaces

  1. Damp cloth

Wipe with a cloth or paper towel dampened with water. Fresh marks lift straight away.

  2. Glass cleaner for haze

If a film remains on glass or mirrors, use an ammonia-free glass cleaner and a dry cloth.

  3. Stubborn dried marks

Chalkola suggests a magic eraser, white vinegar, or a drop of rubbing alcohol on a cloth for dried-on marks on glass, mirrors and whiteboards.

  4. Buff dry

Finish with a dry microfiber cloth so streaks do not show under the next design.

Two cautions. Clear acrylic boards scratch and cloud easily: a Plexiglas care sheet warns that cleaners containing ammonia, alcohol or acetone damage acrylic, and recommends warm water with a little dish detergent and a soft cloth (Vollrath care sheet). And melamine sponges are abrasive: Mr. Clean, for example, lists high gloss, polished, dark and satin finishes among surfaces it does not recommend for its Magic Eraser (Mr. Clean). Test first.

Chalk markers erasable? Ghosting on chalkboards

Ghosting is the faint image of old writing that stays after wiping, and it happens when liquid chalk pigment settles into the pores of a painted board. Prevention is far easier than cure. Chalkola’s advice for a fresh porous chalkboard: rub the side of a regular chalk stick over the whole surface, then wipe it off. That fills the pores so liquid chalk lifts cleanly later. Non-porous boards need no seasoning.

If a board already ghosts:

Chalk marker on windows and cars

Chalkola says its chalk markers wipe off car and house windows with a damp cloth or glass cleaner, leave no residue, and do not damage automotive paint or glass. Remove designs before a trip through the car wash, and wipe any drips off painted body panels promptly. For window projects, see window chalk markers.

How to get chalk marker out of clothes

  1. Act fast

Fresh water-based chalk ink is far easier to remove than dried.

  2. Rinse from the back

Hold the fabric stain side down under cold running water to push pigment out the way it came in.

  3. Pretreat

Dab a little liquid laundry detergent into the spot and work it gently with your fingers.

  4. Wash and check

Wash as the care label allows, then check the spot before drying; heat can set leftover pigment.

Chalk pen cleaners

A damp microfiber cloth is the cleaner most of the time. Dedicated sprays exist for busy menu boards: Chalkola says its natural spray cleaner removes stubborn liquid chalk and dry erase marks from chalkboards, whiteboards and glass, and is water-based with no alcohol, ammonia or petrochemicals. Arteza sells a chalk marker set bundled with a 10 oz cleaner spray, a magnetic eraser and a microfiber towel, per its listing.

Questions people ask

Are chalk markers permanent?

Not on non-porous surfaces: there they wipe off with water. On porous surfaces they effectively are. Chalkola says its markers work on porous surfaces such as concrete, paper, wood and painted surfaces but will not wipe off them, and that its colors resist UV and weather on porous surfaces.

Can I clean a chalkboard with water?

Yes. Non-porous chalkboards, such as glass, acrylic, laminate and porcelain steel boards, wipe clean with a damp cloth. On a porous painted chalkboard, water removes stick chalk and fresh liquid chalk, but dried liquid chalk can leave a ghost image, especially if the board was not seasoned first.

Does liquid chalk wash off?

From non-porous surfaces, yes: a damp cloth or paper towel removes fresh marks, and Chalkola says its chalk markers wipe off car and house windows with a damp cloth or glass cleaner with no residue. From porous surfaces such as raw wood, unsealed chalkboards and paper, it may not wash off fully.

What is a good chalk pen cleaner?

A damp microfiber cloth handles most jobs. For stubborn marks, Chalkola suggests a magic eraser, ammonia-free glass cleaner, white vinegar or a drop of rubbing alcohol. Chalkola and Arteza also sell spray cleaners for chalkboards; Chalkola says its spray is water-based with no alcohol or ammonia.

How to get chalk marker out of clothes?

Act while it is fresh. Liquid chalk markers use water-based ink, so rinse the stain from the back of the fabric under cold running water, dab with a little liquid detergent, then wash as the care label allows. Check the stain is gone before using a dryer, since heat can set any pigment left behind.
