How much are Posca markers?: illustration of an acrylic paint marker drawing a bold stroke

Short answer

Posca prices depend on three things: the tip size (broad and extra broad pens cost more than fine ones), the pack size (multipacks of one tip cost less per pen than singles) and the seller. To pay less, buy a 16 or 24 pen PC-5M set or a multipack of the one color you use most, and compare the price per pen, not the pack price.

What decides the price of a Posca

What changes the price of Posca markers

FactorEffect on price
Tip sizeThe broad PC-7M, PC-8K and extra broad PC-17K cost more per pen than the PC-1M, PC-3M and PC-5M
Pack sizeMultipacks of one tip cost less per pen than singles
Seller and timingPrices vary between stores and change often; sales and coupons matter

Every Posca uses the same water-based pigment paint (Posca range), so you are not paying more for a better paint in a bigger tip, just for more paint and a bigger nib.

Why Posca costs more than budget paint pens

A Posca is a pump marker: a valve and a mixing ball inside the barrel let you shake and prime the paint, and the PC-3M and PC-5M tips are reversible. Posca says its formula has been unchanged since 1983. In Sarah Renae Clark’s pump marker comparison, Posca had almost perfect scores across her tests and the highest score overall, though she wrote that the one thing it lacks is a really good white. Budget sets can be far cheaper per pen; results for budget brands in her tests were more mixed.

How to pay less per Posca pen

  1. Pick your main tip first

Most people use a PC-5M medium for most work. Buy that tip in a set and add a few extra fine PC-1M pens for details.

  2. Buy the set size you will use

A 16 or 24 pen set is usually cheaper per pen than an 8 pack, but only if you will use the extra colors.

  3. Restock singles by color

You will use white, black and a few favorites first. Multipacks of one color (often 3 count) restock those cheaply.

  4. Compare the price per pen

Divide the pack price by the pen count. Check a few sellers, since prices move often.

  5. Look after the pens

A Posca that dries out is the most expensive one. Caps on, stored flat, primed on scrap.

Set sizes and what is in each are compared in Posca marker sets.

Questions people ask

Where can I get Posca pens cheap?

Look for multipacks rather than singles: a 16 or 24 pen PC-5M set, or a 3 count of one color you use a lot, usually beats buying pens one at a time. Amazon, art supply chains and craft stores all stock Posca, and craft store coupons or sales can help. Compare the price per pen across sellers.

Do Posca pens last long?

With good care, a Posca lasts a long time. Keep caps clicked on, store pens flat, shake before use and prime on scrap paper instead of over-pumping. The PC-3M and PC-5M tips are reversible, which Posca says doubles their life. Broad tips use paint faster than fine ones simply because they lay down more.

Why are Posca markers so expensive?

Posca does not publish a cost breakdown. Likely factors are the pigment paint, the valve and mixing ball inside each pen, reversible tips on the fine and medium sizes, and a formula Posca says it has kept since 1983. Demand is high too: an independent comparison rated Posca the best pump-action marker overall.
