Posca markers on fabric

Posca is not sold as a fabric marker, but Posca gives its own directions for textiles, and customizers use it on tote bags, denim and canvas sneakers. The trick is the fixing step. Here is what Posca says to do before, during and after, and when a dedicated fabric marker is the better buy.

Short answer

Yes, Posca works on fabric. Posca says to machine-wash the fabric first to remove coatings, put absorbent paper underneath, draw your design, then once dry iron it from the reverse side with no steam at a temperature that suits the fabric. If the fabric cannot be ironed, Posca suggests a hair dryer held 30 cm away, moved in small circles. Wash inside out at low temperature.

What Posca says about fabric

Posca’s fabric, textiles and skins support page covers natural and synthetic textiles. Its main points:

Posca’s FAQ adds that ironing inside out with no steam prevents the paint from flaking, and recommends washing the fabric inside out at low temperature.

Posca on fabric, step by step

  1. Prewash and dry

Wash the item with no fabric softener and let it dry fully.

  2. Insert paper or card

Slide absorbent paper or card inside shirts and bags so paint does not soak through.

  3. Shake and prime

Shake until the ball rattles and prime the tip on scrap fabric until paint flows evenly.

  4. Draw in light coats

Use light pressure. Paint soaks into natural fibers, so a second coat often helps.

  5. Let it dry

Give it time; heavier coats on cotton take longer.

  6. Iron from the reverse, no steam

Heat suited to the fabric, with greaseproof paper between the iron and fabric.

  7. Wash gently

Inside out, low temperature, per Posca.

Posca on leather, suede and sneakers

For natural or artificial leather, Posca says to wipe the surface with a damp sponge and let it dry; for real or imitation suede, brush it gently with a soft brush first (Posca support). For customized sneakers, Posca’s FAQ advises a water-based aerosol varnish to preserve the drawing. Leather and sneakers bend constantly, so expect some wear at creases and plan to touch up.

Posca vs fabric markers: which to use

ChooseWhen
PoscaYou want opaque color on dark fabric, already own Posca, or are customizing shoes and bags
Fabric markersLight-colored clothes, kids’ projects, soft hand feel, frequent washing
Permanent fabric markersLaundry labels and anything washed often
White fabric markersWhite details on dark clothes, made for wash wear

Opaque paint sits on top of fibers, so heavy Posca coverage can feel stiffer than dye-based fabric marker ink. For a garment you will wash weekly, a dedicated fabric marker is often the more comfortable choice. Our guide to paint pens on fabric compares heat setting across brands, and are Posca markers permanent covers every other surface.

Questions people ask

How to heat set POSCA markers on fabric?

Let the design dry, then iron it from the reverse side without steam, at a temperature that suits the fabric, with a sheet of greaseproof paper between iron and fabric for protection. That is Posca’s own method. For fabrics that cannot be ironed, Posca suggests a hair dryer held about 30 cm from the surface, moved in small circles.

Can POSCA paint markers be used on leather?

Posca covers leather on its fabric, textiles and skins support page: for natural or artificial leather, it says to wipe the surface with a damp sponge and let it dry before drawing, and to brush suede gently with a soft brush. Leather flexes and gets handled, so seal finished leather work and test on a hidden spot first.

Can I use paint markers on fabric?

Yes, if the paint is made or directed for textiles. Water-based paint markers such as Posca give ironing directions for fabric, and fabric paint markers from brands like Tulip are made for it. Oil-based paint markers are not sold for clothing. Prewash, put card or paper inside, and follow the maker’s setting step.

What are POSCA paint markers used for?

Art and customizing on almost any material: paper illustration, rock painting, wood signs, canvas, window art, sneakers, tote bags, denim jackets, ceramics as decoration, and more. Posca says its paint is permanent on porous surfaces and erasable on smooth ones, which is why it suits both lasting art and temporary window designs.

Do POSCA pens rub off?

On fabric, Posca that has been ironed as directed is meant to stay, though high-friction spots may wear over time. On smooth surfaces such as glass, Posca is designed to wipe off with a damp rag unless varnished. Posca recommends a water-based aerosol varnish for customized sneakers.
