Short answer
Yes, Posca makes white in every tip: PC-1M (0.7 mm), PC-3M (0.9 to 1.3 mm), PC-5M (1.8 to 2.5 mm), PC-7M (4.5 to 5.5 mm), PC-8K (8 mm chisel) and PC-17K (15 mm). Start with a PC-5M white for fills and a PC-1M white for details. On dark grounds plan two thin coats; one independent reviewer found Posca’s white weaker than its colors.

White Posca markers, per Posca’s range and the listings
| Pen | Tip | White is best for |
|---|---|---|
| PC-1M | 0.7 mm extra fine bullet | Eye highlights, dots, fine lettering, outlines on black paper |
| PC-3M | 0.9 to 1.3 mm fine, reversible | Everyday writing, small labels, line art |
| PC-5M | 1.8 to 2.5 mm medium, reversible | Filling shapes, ghosts and clouds on rocks, lettering |
| PC-7M | 4.5 to 5.5 mm broad bullet | Big lettering, sneaker panels, signs |
| PC-8K | 8 mm chisel | Bold strokes and quick fills on large pieces |
| PC-17K | 15 mm extra broad | Murals, windows, big chalkboard-style boards |
Every Posca uses the same water-based pigment paint (Posca range). The tip is the only difference, so choose by the width of mark you make most. If you only buy two, make them a PC-5M and a PC-1M white.
How opaque is white Posca?
White is the hardest color for any paint marker, because it has to hide what is underneath with no help from its own color. Here an honest note matters. In Sarah Renae Clark’s pump marker comparison, Posca had almost perfect scores across every test and the highest score overall, but she wrote that the one thing Posca lacks is a really good white. In the same review, the Arteza extra fine white was one of the best performers in her white pen comparison, and on our white paint markers page Artistro’s extra fine white is another strong option.
That does not make white Posca a bad buy: it is still a dependable, widely available white in every size. It just means you should plan for two coats on dark grounds.
Getting solid white coverage
- Shake hard
White pigment is heavy and settles. Shake with the cap on until the ball rattles freely, then a little longer.
- Prime on scrap
Press the tip on paper until the line is solid white, not grey or watery.
- First thin coat
Lay down an even coat with light pressure. It will look streaky over dark colors; that is normal.
- Let it dry fully
A few minutes on paper, longer on stone. A second coat over damp paint lifts the first.
- Second coat
Go over the same area. Most dark grounds look solid white after two thin coats.
White Posca on different surfaces
- Black paper and card: lettering, illustration and highlights. Use the PC-1M or PC-3M for line work.
- Rocks: ghosts, clouds, eyes, lettering and dot work. Seal outdoor rocks. See paint pens for rock painting.
- Fabric and sneakers: Posca is used for customizing; heat setting and testing first matter. More in how to use paint pens on fabric.
- Glass and windows: great for temporary designs. Posca says a damp rag cleans its paint off glass.
- Metal and plastic you handle: water-based white can scratch off. An oil-based white such as Sharpie oil-based or Uni Paint PX-20 grips better.
Posca white versus other whites
| White | Base | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|
| Posca white | Water-based pigment paint | Every tip size, paper, rocks, fabric, art |
| Molotow ONE4ALL white | Acrylic | Refillable pens and refill ink |
| Artistro or Arteza extra fine white | Water-based acrylic | Fine white lines, strong opacity in independent testing |
| Sharpie oil-based white | Oil-based paint | Glass, metal, plastic, outdoor labels |
| Uni Paint PX-20 white | Oil-based paint | Glossy white on slick surfaces |
Posca pen case and storage
Store Posca pens horizontally with caps clicked on, which keeps the paint mixed and the tips from drying. Whites in particular should not sit tip-up for weeks, because the heavy pigment settles away from the tip. If a white starts writing grey, shake longer and re-prime. A pen case that holds pens flat is worth having once you own a few sizes. If a tip stops flowing, see paint pen not working.

Questions people ask
Is there a white POSCA marker?
Yes, in every tip size Posca makes: PC-1M extra fine, PC-3M fine, PC-5M medium, PC-7M broad bullet, PC-8K broad chisel and PC-17K extra broad. On Amazon you can buy white singly, in white multipacks, or in a mixed pack with one white each of PC-1M, PC-3M and PC-5M.
Why are Poscas so expensive?
Posca has not published a cost breakdown. Likely factors are the pigment paint, the valve and mixing ball inside every pen, reversible tips on the fine and medium sizes, and a formula Posca says has been unchanged since 1983. An independent comparison rated Posca the best pump-action marker overall, which keeps demand high.
Is POSCA better than Sharpie?
They do different jobs. Posca is a water-based paint marker that covers strongly on paper, wood, stone and fabric. A classic Sharpie is a translucent dye-ink marker. Sharpie’s oil-based paint markers grip glass, metal and plastic better than Posca, which wipes off smooth surfaces unless varnished. For white on rocks and paper, Posca; for white on glass or metal that will be handled, an oil-based white.
Is POSCA paint marker permanent?
Posca says its paint is permanent on porous surfaces such as paper, cardboard, wood and stone, and erasable on smooth surfaces such as glass, where a damp rag removes it. For lasting work on smooth or handled surfaces, Posca recommends a water-based spray varnish.
Where can I get Posca pens cheap?
The best price per pen usually comes from multipacks of one tip, such as a 3 count of PC-5M white, rather than singles. Amazon, art supply chains and craft stores all stock Posca; compare the price per pen across a few sellers. We do not list prices because they change constantly.
