Flysea acrylic paint markers

Flysea is a Chinese stationery factory that sells paint markers under its own name and, according to an independent reviewer, makes markers that other brands sell under theirs. That makes Flysea a useful benchmark for budget acrylic paint pens. Here is what we could verify about the company, the review results and the sets on Amazon.

Short answer

Flysea acrylic paint markers come from Shenzhen Xingmao Stationery, which its site says was established in 2012 with a factory in Guangdong. In Sarah Renae Clark’s direct ink review, both Flysea’s brush pens and its dual tip markers performed above average on most tests; she noted a smell with the brush pens. On Amazon, the Flysea sets we verified are extra fine tip sets and a black and white set with 0.7 mm and 3 mm tips.

Who makes Flysea paint markers?

Flysea’s company site belongs to Shenzhen Xingmao Stationery Co., Ltd. It says the company was established in 2012 and is located in Puning City, Guangdong Province, with a factory area of 20,000 square meters, and that it supports customized products at home and abroad. Its catalog lists paint pens, acrylic markers, metallic, chalk and glitter markers, watercolor brush pens and acrylic paint.

Independent reviewer Sarah Renae Clark goes further: she writes that Flysea is the factory that makes several of the other brands of markers she tested, and that its markers are commonly white-labeled for other brands (direct ink review). That is why her Flysea results are a useful benchmark for many budget sets.

The Flysea listings we could verify on Amazon are fine tip sets rather than the reviewed brush and dual tip pens:

Because the reviewed pens and the listed sets differ, treat the review as a guide to Flysea’s general quality rather than a test of these exact sets.

Questions people ask

Why are POSCA markers so expensive?

Posca has not published a cost breakdown. Likely factors are the pigment paint, the valve and mixing ball in every pen, reversible tips on the fine and medium sizes, and a formula Posca says has not changed since 1983. Factory brands such as Flysea sell direct, in big sets, with less brand overhead, which is part of why they cost less per pen.

What is the best pen to use on acrylic paint?

An acrylic paint marker. It bonds with dry acrylic paint, so fine details, outlines and lettering sit cleanly on top of a painting. Use an extra fine or fine tip, such as a 0.7 mm Flysea or Posca PC-1M, once the paint underneath is fully dry, and varnish the finished piece.

What’s the difference between acrylic and watercolor markers?

Acrylic markers hold opaque paint that dries water resistant on porous surfaces and covers other colors. Watercolor markers hold transparent, water-soluble ink that can be blended and moved with a wet brush, even after drying. Use acrylic for bold, layered color on many surfaces, and watercolor markers for soft washes on paper.

Are acrylic paint markers water resistant?

Once dry, yes on porous surfaces such as paper, wood, canvas and stone. On smooth surfaces such as glass, metal and plastic, water-based acrylic can wash or scratch off unless sealed with a clear spray. For outdoor or washable items, seal the work or use an oil-based paint marker.

Does Dollar Tree sell acrylic paint pens?

Stock varies by store and changes often, so we cannot say what a given store carries. Discount stores sometimes stock paint pens in craft or school aisles. Check the store’s website, and compare what you find against the tip sizes and paint types on our pages so you know what you are getting.
