Short answer
For a mid grey on light fabric, the edding 4500 textile marker in grey is listed as wash-resistant up to 60 °C after ironing without steam. Marvy Uchida sells several grays in single pens: a fine 522 gray, a 522 cool light grey and a broad 622 warm gray. For grey that shows on dark fabric, use an opaque paint marker such as a Posca grey and heat set it.

Grey fabric markers by shade
Grey fabric marker shades and uses
| Shade | Looks like | Use it for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light, cool grey | Pale blue-grey | Soft shadows, clouds, silver effects on white | Marvy 522 cool light grey |
| Mid grey | Neutral grey | Outlines, lettering, stone and metal | edding 4500 grey, Marvy 522 gray |
| Warm gray | Grey with a brown cast | Shadows on warm colors, animals, wood | Marvy 622 warm gray |
| Dark gray | Nearly black | Outlines softer than black, faded denim | HARFINGTON dark gray |
| Opaque grey paint | Solid grey | Grey that shows on dark fabric | Posca PC-5M grey |
Grey shades vary more than most colors, and gray on fabric dries a little lighter than it looks wet on some fibers. Test on a seam or scrap and let it dry before judging the color.
Gray fabric marker vs black
Black outlines can look harsh on soft designs, kids’ drawings and pastel fabrics. A dark gray keeps the definition without the contrast. For lettering that must read from a distance, black still wins; see black fabric markers.
Using grey for shading on fabric
- Prewash
Wash and dry the garment with no fabric softener.
- Draw the colors first
Lay down your main colors and let them dry.
- Add grey shadows
Shade on one side of each shape, all on the same side as if lit from one direction.
- Soften edges
Use a light grey next to a darker one for a two-step shadow instead of blending.
- Set it
Follow the maker’s setting step, for example ironing without steam for edding 4500, then wash inside out.
Grey on dark and synthetic fabric
Dye-based grey will not show on navy or black, because dye only darkens fibers. Use an opaque paint marker or a marker sold for dark fabrics, and see white fabric markers for the same problem in white. On polyester, colors take less well than on cotton; Marvy’s listings say its markers work best on natural fibers. For the longest wash life, see permanent fabric markers.
More single-color fabric markers: brown fabric markers and red fabric markers. The Marvy line is explained on Marvy Uchida fabric markers, and every type on fabric markers.
Questions people ask
What marker works on polyester?
Fabric markers and fabric paint markers can mark polyester, but synthetic fibers absorb dye less than cotton, so colors look lighter and can wash out faster. Several listings, including Marvy Uchida’s, say their markers work best on natural fibers like cotton. On polyester, test on a seam, let the ink dry fully and heat set at a temperature safe for the fabric.
Do fabric markers work on leather?
Not well. Fabric markers are made to soak into woven fibers, and smooth leather does not absorb them, so the color can rub off. Use leather paint or an acrylic paint marker on prepared leather, then seal it. Posca, for example, says to wipe leather with a damp sponge and let it dry before drawing.
Are fabric markers wash proof?
No marker is wash proof forever, but fabric markers set as the maker directs are wash resistant. The edding 4500 listing, for example, says results are wash-resistant up to 60 °C after heat fixing by ironing without steam. Wash inside out, gently, and line dry for the longest life.
What are some good fabric markers for dark colors?
Opaque fabric paint markers, not dye-based markers, because dye cannot lighten dark fibers. Look for markers sold for dark fabric, such as Marvy’s Deco Fabric line, white and light fabric paint markers from Tulip or Artline, or a water-based paint marker like Posca heat set as its maker directs.
What kind of marker works best on fabric?
A marker made for textiles: dye-based fabric markers for light fabrics and soft results, opaque fabric paint markers for dark fabrics. Follow the maker’s setting step, prewash without softener, and put card underneath while you draw. Ordinary permanent markers bleed and fade on fabric.
