Short answer
Shake it hard with the cap on until the mixing ball moves freely, then press the tip on scrap paper several times until paint soaks through. If nothing comes, the tip has dried: pull it out and soak it in warm water (or soak a fixed tip in place), dry it, refit it and prime again. Do not pump hard and fast; that floods the pen and causes leaks.
First, which problem is it?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No paint, never used | Never primed | Steps 1 and 2 |
| Faint, streaky or clear paint | Paint separated in the barrel | Shake longer (step 1) |
| Worked before, now dry | Tip dried out | Steps 3 to 5 |
| Scratchy, no flow, hard tip | Dried paint in the nib | Soak (step 4), or swap the tip |
| Blobs, drips, leaks | Over-pumped or warm | Blot, cap, rest it cool |
How to fix a paint pen that won’t flow
- Shake it with the cap on
Shake firmly with the cap tightly closed so the mixing ball can remix the paint. Keep going for a while after you first hear it rattle; pigment settles hard at the bottom. Montana tells users to shake its Acrylic markers for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Prime on scrap paper
Uncap and press the tip down on scrap paper several times until paint saturates it. Short, gentle presses with a pause between them work better than hard pumping. Posca recommends priming on first use and after the marker has sat unused.
- Moisten a dry tip
If paint will not reach the tip, dab the tip on a damp paper towel, then prime again. Posca notes that a tip that is too dry can block paint flow even when the pen is full.
- Soak a dried tip
Pull the tip out with soft tweezers (keep the pen tip up so nothing drips) and soak it in warm water for a few minutes. Posca says non-removable tips, such as the PC-1MR and PCF-350, can be soaked in place, because the valve stops water entering the marker.
- Dry, refit and prime
Pat the tip dry, push it firmly back into place, and prime again on scrap until the color runs true.
- Swap or reverse a ruined tip
If the tip is frayed or permanently hard, replace it. Posca says the PC-5M tip is easily reversible; Liquitex and Molotow sell spare nibs.
Steps follow Posca’s FAQ and Life of Colour’s troubleshooting guide, with Montana’s shaking time from its technical sheet.
The mistake that causes most leaks
When a pen will not flow, the instinct is to pump harder. Life of Colour strongly recommends against it: if the nib is dry or clogged, each pump pushes more paint into the chamber below the nib, which causes blockages and leaks. Revive the tip first, then prime gently.
Brand quirks
- Posca PCF-350 (brush): primed with a pushbutton at the other end of the marker, not by pressing the brush.
- Artistro medium: needed 10 to 20 pumps to start in independent testing. Patience, not force.
- Direct-ink markers such as Enmy Ink Control have no valve to prime; if they stop, the tip is usually dry or the paint unmixed. Shake and moisten the tip.
Keep it from happening again
- Cap pens whenever you stop, even briefly.
- Store them at room temperature, away from sunny windows and hot cars.
- Re-shake every few minutes during long sessions, especially light colors.
- Keep a scrap sheet beside you and test the flow each time you pick a pen up.

Questions people ask
Why won’t a fresh paint pen work?
It has not been primed. Paint pens ship with the paint settled and the tip dry. Shake for a good while with the cap on, then press the tip on scrap paper repeatedly until it saturates. Some budget markers take 10 to 20 presses.
My paint pen is leaking or blobbing. What happened?
It was over-pumped, or it got warm. Pumping a dry tip pushes paint into the chamber below the nib, which then floods. Blot the tip on scrap, cap it, and store it somewhere cool. Posca warns that heat makes its paint too fluid.
Is my paint pen empty?
Probably not. Posca notes that a marker that stops working is often just dry at the tip. If you can hear the ball, there is usually paint; revive the tip before giving up.
Can I use rubbing alcohol to unclog a paint pen?
Many artists soak a tip clogged with dried acrylic in 70 percent or stronger isopropyl alcohol when water does not work. Soak only the removable tip, rinse it in water afterward, and keep alcohol out of the barrel.
How should I store paint pens so they keep working?
Caps on firmly, at room temperature, away from heat. Posca says its markers can be stored in any position except the brush, which it recommends storing horizontally.
