Short answer
For opaque brush strokes, Posca’s PC-5BR (1 to 4 mm by pressure) and softer PCF-350 (1 to 10 mm) are the maker-spec picks. Enmy Ink Control was the favorite marker in the largest independent comparison. Skip watery cotton core brush sets if coverage matters.

Enmy Ink Control
Best for: lettering and coloring on paper and plastic
- Mechanism
- Direct ink
- Tip
- Brush
- Refillable
- No
- Price tier
- Budget
- No pumping: the ink is fed straight to the tip and stays mixed.
- Vibrant and opaque on paper in testing, easy on plastic.
- Downsides: soaked into rock, and the tip felt a bit flimsy, so use a light touch.
“I just wish the tip was a little stronger, it seems a bit flimsy and so I’d recommend a light touch!”

Three kinds of brush marker
| Type | How it works | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pump-action brush | A valve feeds paint to a fiber brush when you press it. | Most opaque | Can flood if over-pumped |
| Direct ink | A mixing chamber feeds the brush with no pumping. | Smooth, consistent flow | Soaks into porous surfaces |
| Cotton core | Paint is held in a fiber core, like a felt marker. | Clean and mess-free | Usually less opaque, often watery |
The categories come from Sarah Renae Clark’s comparison, which tested each type separately.
What to skip
The Artistro Brush Tip set had one of the weakest results in the cotton core group: watery, washed-out color, four of sixteen markers not matching their lid colors, and below-average scores throughout. The reviewer did not recommend it (cotton core results). Artistro’s dual tip set (brush plus fine) fared better, rated average with a huge color range. More in our Artistro guide.
Brush lettering basics with paint markers
- Light up, heavy down. Thin upstrokes, press on downstrokes. Slow down: paint needs a moment to follow the tip.
- Keep the brush wet. Prime on scrap before a word, not in the middle of one.
- Smooth paper wins. Rough paper frays brush fibers. Heavier mixed media paper also resists buckling.
- Layer, do not blend. Acrylic dries flat and fast. Add a highlight line once the base is dry.

Questions people ask
Are brush tip paint markers good for calligraphy?
Yes for brush lettering, where line weight comes from pressure. They are less suited to broad-nib calligraphy, which needs a chisel edge.
Why is my brush tip marker streaky?
Usually the paint is unmixed or the tip is too dry. Shake well, prime on scrap, and keep strokes confident. Cotton core brush markers are naturally less opaque than pump-action brushes.
How should I store brush tip paint markers?
Follow the maker. Posca says its markers can be stored in any position with the cap firmly on, except the Posca brush, which it recommends storing horizontally.
Can I replace a brush tip?
Often not. Posca lists the PCF-350 brush tip as non-removable and says to soak it directly in water if it dries out.
