Best paper for acrylic markers

Acrylic markers lay down wet, opaque paint, so thin paper buckles, pills and lets color through to the next page. The fix is simple: heavier, well-sized paper. Here is what to look for, which paper types work, black paper for light colors, and the pads we would start with.

Short answer

Use mixed media paper of about 160 gsm (98 lb) or heavier, such as a Canson XL Mix Media pad. It is sized for wet media, so paint markers sit on top without pilling or bleeding through. For light colors and white, a black mixed media or drawing pad makes them glow. Smooth cardstock works for cards; avoid printer and thin sketch paper for anything more than tests.

Best paper for Posca markers

Posca is a water-based paint marker, and Posca describes its PC-5M paint as water soluble, mixable and layerable on its product page. That means it behaves like thin paint on paper: it needs sizing to stay on top, and weight to stay flat. Mixed media paper is the safe default. Canson’s XL Mix Media listing describes 160 gsm, acid-free sheets for dry and wet media and claims color will not bleed onto the next page; the rough version is listed at 185 gsm.

Black paper is where Posca and other opaque markers shine, because dye-based markers vanish on it. In Sarah Renae Clark’s pump marker review, performance on black paper was one of the things she checked, and some markers soaked into it while others sat on top. Heavier black paper helps every brand.

How to stop bleed-through and buckling

  1. Use a backing sheet

Slip scrap paper under the page you are working on.

  2. Light strokes

Press gently; pressing hard floods the tip and soaks the paper.

  3. Dry between layers

Let each layer dry before going over it, or the surface pills.

  4. Tape loose sheets

Tape single sheets to a board on all sides to keep them flat.

  5. Flatten after

Press a dry, buckled page under heavy books overnight.

Questions people ask

Can you use acrylic markers on any paper?

They will mark any paper, but thin paper struggles: it buckles under wet paint, pills when you layer, and shows through to the next page. Paper of about 160 gsm or heavier, made for mixed or wet media, handles acrylic markers well. Printer paper is fine for testing colors, not for finished work.

Which sketchbook is best for acrylic markers?

A mixed media sketchbook or pad of about 160 gsm or heavier, such as Canson XL Mix Media or Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media. For bright colors and white on dark, a black paper sketchbook. Wire-bound books lie flat, which helps when pages need time to dry.

What is the best paper to use with acrylic inks?

Heavy, well-sized paper that tolerates water: mixed media paper, hot-press watercolor paper, or heavyweight bristol for smooth line work. Fluid acrylic inks are wetter than paint markers, so for washes choose watercolor paper and tape it down to limit buckling.

Do acrylic markers work on cardstock?

Yes. Smooth cardstock takes acrylic markers well for cards, tags and lettering, especially heavier cardstock. Coated or glossy cardstock can make paint bead or rub off, so test first. Let each layer dry before the next to avoid lifting the surface.

Do Posca pens bleed through paper?

On heavy paper, usually not, because the paint sits on the surface. On thin sketch or printer paper, heavy strokes and layering can show through or soak to the next page. Use mixed media paper of about 160 gsm or more, and slip a scrap sheet under the page you are working on.
