Short answer
Mostly no, once dry. Wet acrylic marker paint wipes or rinses off with water. Once dry, it is permanent on porous surfaces such as fabric, paper, wood and stone, and washable or erasable on smooth surfaces such as glass, glazed ceramic and some plastics. On clothes it can survive washing, especially if heat set, so treat spills fast. A few kids’ paint pens are sold as washable; standard acrylic markers are not.
Washable, water-based and permanent are not the same
Three words get mixed up on marker labels:
- Water-based describes what the paint is made with. Most acrylic markers are water-based, which means water cleanup while wet and a mild smell.
- Washable is a specific claim that the ink comes out of skin and most clothes in the wash. Kids’ markers sold as washable are made for this. A standard acrylic marker is not.
- Permanent means the mark stays after drying. Acrylic paint dries into a film that bonds to porous surfaces, which is why acrylic markers behave as permanent on paper, wood, stone and fabric.
So an acrylic marker can be water-based and still not be washable. If washability matters, look for the word washable on the package. For what acrylic markers are in general, see what are acrylic markers.
What washes off, surface by surface
Water-based acrylic marker paint by surface, wet and dry
| Surface | Wet paint | Dry paint |
|---|---|---|
| Paper and card | Blots, but stains | Permanent |
| Raw wood and stone | Wipes partly, stains | Permanent; seal for outdoors |
| Fabric and clothes | Rinse fast in cold water | Often survives washing, more so if heat set |
| Skin | Soap and water | Soap and water, a few washes; wears off |
| Glass and windows | Wipes off | Washes or scrapes off unless sealed |
| Glazed ceramic | Wipes off | Washes off in use and in the dishwasher |
| Plastic and metal | Wipes off | Scratches or peels off unless sealed |
| Painted walls | Damp cloth | Hard to remove without damaging the wall paint |
Posca states the general rule simply: its paint is permanent on porous surfaces and erasable on smooth surfaces (Posca FAQ). Most water-based acrylic markers behave the same way.
Acrylic markers on clothes
Fabric is porous, so dry acrylic marker paint grips the fibers. Makers that sell their markers for fabric lean on this: Posca suggests ironing finished, dry designs from the reverse side without steam, or using a hair dryer if ironing does not suit the fabric (Posca fabric support), and recommends washing decorated fabric inside out at low temperature (Posca FAQ). That same grip makes accidental marks hard to remove once dry.
If acrylic marker gets on clothes
- Act while it is wet
Blot, do not rub. Rubbing pushes paint deeper into the fibers.
- Rinse from the back
Run cold water through the back of the fabric to push paint out the way it came in.
- Pretreat
Work in liquid detergent and let it sit, then rinse again.
- Wash and check before drying
Tide notes that drying sets stains, so check the spot before the dryer and repeat if needed.
Tide’s ink guide also advises testing any solvent on a hidden spot for colorfastness first (Tide ink guide). Dried paint is much harder; our guide to getting marker out of fabric has more methods. If you want marks to stay, see how to use paint pens on fabric.
Acrylic markers on skin
Acrylic markers are not made for skin. Posca, for example, says its markers are not certified for cosmetic use and must not be used on skin. If some gets on hands, wash with soap and warm water; dry paint usually comes off over a few washes. Never use solvents on skin.
Washable paint pens for kids
Some paint pens are sold specifically as washable, such as the ArtSkills acrylic paint pens, which the listing calls washable paint markers for kids and adults. Expect a trade-off: what washes out of clothes will also wash off a project more easily, so seal anything that needs to last. For low-mess options, see non-toxic paint markers.
Making acrylic marker art last
- Seal smooth and outdoor surfaces with a clear spray. Spray the first coat; a brush can drag marker paint.
- Heat set fabric as the maker directs.
- Keep it out of strong sun where you can, and varnish pieces that hang near windows.
- Hand wash decorated mugs and glass unless you used a bake-on marker and cured it.
The sealing method is in how to seal acrylic marker art, and removal by surface in how to remove paint marker. Posca specifics are on are Posca markers permanent.

Questions people ask
Will acrylic markers wash off?
While the paint is wet, yes: water and a cloth lift it from most surfaces and soap and water clean it off hands. Once dry, it stays on porous surfaces such as paper, wood, stone and fabric. On smooth surfaces such as glass, glazed ceramic and many plastics, dry water-based acrylic marker can be washed or scratched off, which is why decor on those surfaces needs a sealer.
Are acrylic markers permanent on clothes?
They can be. Acrylic marker paint soaks into fabric fibers and, once dry, often survives washing, especially after heat setting with an iron. That is useful for decorating clothes on purpose and bad news for accidental marks. For an accident, act while the paint is wet: blot, rinse in cold water and pretreat before washing.
How long will acrylic markers last?
On paper, wood or canvas kept indoors and out of strong sun, dry acrylic marker art lasts for years, longer if varnished. Outdoors, sun and rain wear it, so seal it and expect to touch it up. As for the pens, caps on and flat storage keep them working; a dried tip can often be revived by shaking and priming.
What marker works best on acrylic?
On a dry acrylic painting, an acrylic paint marker, because it bonds with the paint underneath; use a fine tip for details. On acrylic plastic sheet, a water-based paint marker can wipe off, which is handy for temporary designs, while an oil-based paint marker grips better for permanent marks.
