Short answer
Soucolor art markers come in two kinds on Amazon: water-based dual tip brush markers (sets of 36 and 72, a brush tip plus a fine tip) for coloring books and lettering, and alcohol markers (a 120 color set with fine and chisel tips) for blended illustration. Choose water-based for thin paper and kids, alcohol for smooth blends on marker paper. For opaque color on rocks, wood or dark paper, use acrylic paint markers instead.
Soucolor marker sets we verified
Soucolor sets, per the Amazon listing titles
| Set | Type | Tips | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 dual tip brush markers | Water-based | Brush and fine | Adult coloring books, lettering |
| 72 dual brush markers | Water-based | Brush and fine | Coloring books with a wide palette |
| Alcohol markers for beginners, 120 colors | Alcohol-based | Fine and chisel | Blended illustration on marker paper |
Soucolor also lists larger alcohol marker sets with stands and cases. The types matter more than the counts, so start by choosing water-based or alcohol.
Water-based brush markers vs alcohol markers
| Water-based dual brush | Alcohol markers | |
|---|---|---|
| Bleed on thin paper | Less likely | Bleeds through most thin paper |
| Blending | Light, with water or layering | Smooth blends while wet |
| Smell | Mild | Alcohol smell; ventilate |
| Kids | Better choice | Better for teens and adults |
| Paper | Coloring books, sketchbooks | Marker paper or heavy smooth paper |
Neither type is opaque: both are transparent inks that build color in layers. If you want bright color on black paper, rocks or wood, you want paint markers instead. Our acrylic markers for coloring books guide explains when an opaque marker beats a dye marker in a coloring book.
How the type compares: what an independent reviewer found
We could not find a hands-on review of Soucolor itself, but Sarah Renae Clark has tested similar budget brands. In her water-based marker review, she found Ohuhu Maui markers very nice for blending, pretty good at layering and gentle on paper, and very good quality for the price (water-based marker review). In her alcohol marker review, she called Ohuhu Honolulu the best alcohol markers and the best value for money, and found Caliart’s alcohol markers vibrant with a decent range but noted they ran a bit in water tests (alcohol marker review). Treat those as benchmarks when choosing any budget set, Soucolor included. See Ohuhu markers and Caliart markers.
Getting good results from budget marker sets
- Swatch every color first. Cap colors in big budget sets do not always match the ink. A swatch chart saves surprises.
- Use the right paper. Alcohol markers need marker paper or heavy smooth stock; put a scrap sheet behind the page.
- Light to dark. Lay the lightest color first, then build shadows, especially with alcohol markers.
- Cap firmly. Brush tips and alcohol ink dry out fast when caps are loose.
- Store flat if the listing does not say otherwise, so dual tips both stay wet.
When to choose something else
| If you want | Look at |
|---|---|
| Opaque color on rocks, wood, dark paper | paint markers |
| Watercolor effects with a wet brush | watercolor brush pens |
| Drawing and sketching markers | drawing markers |
| A tested alcohol marker set | Ohuhu |

Questions people ask
Are soucolor markers good?
They are budget sets with a lot of colors for the money, aimed at coloring, lettering and beginners. We have not found an independent hands-on review of Soucolor markers, so we cannot say how they compare in blending or color accuracy. If you want a tested budget option, Ohuhu’s water-based and alcohol markers were recommended in Sarah Renae Clark’s comparisons.
What is the best brand of art markers?
It depends on the marker type. For alcohol markers, Sarah Renae Clark called Ohuhu Honolulu the best alcohol markers and the best value, with Copic as the premium standard for blending. For water-based coloring markers, she recommended Ohuhu Maui. For opaque acrylic paint markers, Posca is the usual benchmark.
Which are the best art markers?
Choose by job: alcohol markers for smooth blended illustration on marker paper, water-based brush markers for coloring books, lettering and kids, acrylic paint markers for opaque color on any surface, and fineliners for line work. Within each type, compare tips, color range, refills and independent reviews.
Which is better, Caliart or Ohuhu?
In Sarah Renae Clark’s tests, Ohuhu came out ahead. She called Ohuhu Honolulu her choice for the best alcohol markers and recommended Ohuhu Maui water-based markers for blending and layering. She found Caliart alcohol markers vibrant with a soft chisel nib but noted they ran a bit in water tests, and said Caliart’s water-based markers did not feel great to use overall.
Are Soucolor markers acrylic?
No. The Soucolor sets we verified are water-based dual brush markers and alcohol markers. Neither is opaque paint, so they will not cover dark paper or sit on top of other colors like an acrylic paint marker. For that, see acrylic paint markers such as Posca or the budget acrylic sets we cover.
