Royal Langnickel acrylic markers

Royal & Langnickel is best known for artist brushes, and its acrylic marker line is built around a clever idea: one color in four tip sizes, from a 0.7 mm line to a 12 mm jumbo. There are also six-piece color packs. Here is what each set contains, what the listings say, and where they fit next to Posca.

Short answer

The standout Royal & Langnickel acrylic markers are the 4 piece single-color sets in white, black, gold and silver: each has an ultra fine 0.7 mm, a fine 1.2 mm, a 2 mm reversible (round and chisel) and a 12 mm jumbo tip, per the listings. That makes them a neat way to get every width of white or black at once. Six-piece color packs add primaries and rainbow colors. We found no independent tests of them.

The four-tip single-color sets

Each 4 piece set is one color in four tips. Per the listings for the white and gold sets, the tips are:

Reversible2.0 mm, round one end and chisel the otherRound edges or angled strokes

The sets come in white, black, gold and silver. The listings describe premium acrylic markers for canvas, glass, fabric, wood and more. Compare these widths with other brands on the tip size chart.

Why buy one color in four tips?

Most sets give you many colors in one tip. Artists who work on black paper or dark canvas often need the opposite: white in every width, for fine highlights, lettering and big fills. The same goes for black outlines on light work, and for metallic gold or silver lettering. A four-tip set covers that in one purchase. Color-specific comparisons: white paint markers, black paint markers, gold paint markers and silver paint markers.

Questions people ask

What markers can you use on acrylic?

On a dry acrylic painting, acrylic paint markers sit on top and add opaque lines and lettering: Royal & Langnickel, Posca, Liquitex and similar. On acrylic sheet (plastic), paint markers work for decoration if the surface is clean and the design is sealed; oil-based paint markers grip slick plastic better for permanent marks.

What are some good acrylic markers for canvas?

Wide markers do the most work on canvas: a 12 to 15 mm jumbo tip, such as the jumbo in Royal & Langnickel’s four-tip sets, Montana Acrylic 15 mm or Posca PC-17K, blocks in color fast. Add a 0.7 to 2 mm tip for outlines. Seal with a varnish made for acrylic paintings.

Are acrylic paint markers good for paint by numbers?

They can be: fine tips fill small numbered areas neatly without a brush, and opaque paint covers the printed numbers and lines. Use a 1 to 2 mm tip for small spaces and a wider tip or brushed paint for the biggest areas, which can streak with a small marker.

Do acrylic markers work the same as acrylic paint?

Similar paint, different handling. Acrylic markers hold thinner, fluid acrylic paint behind a tip, so they excel at lines, lettering and small fills with no brush cleanup. Tube or craft acrylic is thicker, blends longer and covers big areas better. Many artists brush the background and use markers for detail.
