King Art markers, line by line

KINGART makes three very different kinds of marker: opaque acrylic paint markers, water-based watercolor brush markers, and alcohol sketch markers. Buying the wrong type is the usual disappointment. Here is what each line does and how to use it.

Short answer

King Art markers come in three families. The 409 acrylic paint markers have a 2 mm bullet tip and water-based acrylic ink that KINGART says needs no shaking: use them on rocks, wood and dark paper. The watercolor brush markers blend like watercolor on paper. The alcohol sketch markers are for illustration on heavy, bleedproof paper.

Details come from KINGART’s pages for its acrylic paint markers, watercolor brush markers and twin-tip alcohol markers. KINGART says the acrylic sets use a 2 mm bullet tip and water-based acrylic ink that flows with no shaking required.

KINGART acrylic paint markers

The 409 series is KINGART’s paint pen line, sold in 24, 36, 48 and larger sets with a storage case. Because the paint is opaque, these work on surfaces that ordinary markers cannot cover: painted rocks, wood signs, black paper, pumpkins and craft projects. The single 2 mm tip is a middle size, good for shapes and lettering but not for very fine detail. Pair a set with an extra fine pen for outlines; see fine tip paint markers.

King Art watercolor brush markers

KINGART’s watercolor brush markers use water-based ink and a flexible nylon brush tip. KINGART says you can blend, layer and get watercolor-like washes, and that heavyweight paper holds the ink without bleeding (maker page). They are not paint pens: the color is translucent and will not cover dark paper. Use them for illustration, hand lettering and soft color, not for rocks or wood.

  1. Use heavy paper.

Mixed media or watercolor paper resists buckling when you add water.

  2. Lay down color.

Light pressure for fine lines, more pressure for broad strokes.

  3. Blend with water.

Brush over the color with a damp brush or water brush to spread it into a wash.

  4. Layer when dry.

Let washes dry before adding detail on top.

KINGART sketch markers

KINGART’s sketch markers are alcohol-based twin-tip markers with a 4 mm chisel and a 1 mm bullet, sold in 12, 36 and 60 color sets, plus a PRO double-ended line. KINGART says they conform to ASTM D-4236 and recommends heavy, bleedproof, uncoated, smooth paper (maker page). Like all alcohol markers they bleed through thin paper, so use marker paper and a backing sheet. For alcohol-marker shopping see drawing markers and art markers.

About KINGART

KINGART’s story page says its founding family started Loew-Cornell Inc. in 1963 and served the art, craft and hobby market through 2006, and that the KINGART brand came later to carry that experience into one brand. KINGART says it is based in New York City and works with manufacturing partners around the world. Those are the company’s own statements.

KINGART vs other budget brands

For acrylic paint markers, KINGART competes with Arrtx acrylic markers and Ohuhu acrylic markers, which lean toward brush tips, while KINGART’s 409 sets use a bullet tip. If you want the most proven paint pen, Posca has the strongest independent results. Unsure which type you need? Try our acrylic marker picker.

Questions people ask

What markers do artists use?

It depends on the work. Illustrators often use alcohol markers for smooth blends, lettering artists use brush pens, and painters and muralists use opaque paint markers such as Posca or Molotow. Fineliners handle ink drawings. KINGART sells budget versions of the first three, which is why it shows up in so many beginner kits.

Do KINGART markers bleed through?

Alcohol markers, including KINGART’s sketch markers, can bleed through thin paper; KINGART recommends heavy, smooth, uncoated bleedproof paper. Its PRO water-based marker kit claims a non-bleed formula. Acrylic paint markers sit on top of the paper and bleed less, but always put a scrap sheet underneath.

What’s the difference between paint pens and markers?

Paint pens hold opaque, pigmented paint that sits on the surface and covers what is beneath, so they work on dark paper, rock, wood and glass. Markers hold dye or alcohol ink that soaks in and stays translucent, which is ideal for blending on paper. KINGART’s 409 sets are paint pens; its sketch and watercolor markers are markers.

How to use Kingart watercolor brush markers?

Draw with the flexible nylon brush tip, using light pressure for thin lines and more for broad strokes. KINGART says the water-based ink blends and layers for watercolor-like washes. To blend, brush over the color with a wet brush or water brush, or lay colors next to each other while wet. Use heavyweight paper so it does not buckle.

Are King Art markers good quality?

We found no independent comparison of KINGART markers, so we cannot rank them against other brands on results. KINGART traces its roots to Loew-Cornell, an art supply company its founding family started in 1963. Treat the sets as solid budget options for practice and crafts, and check each listing’s details.
