Short answer

To use a DecoArt Glass Paint Marker, DecoArt says to shake well, clean the glass with glass cleaner, and press the tip down until color appears. Let the piece air cure about 8 hours, then, for a dishwasher-safe finish on oven-safe items, put it in a cool oven, set it to 325 °F, bake 30 minutes, and let it cool with the door partly open. DecoArt says the markers are not for direct contact with food.

How to use DecoArt glass paint markers

  1. Shake well

Mix the paint before every use.

  2. Clean the glass

DecoArt says to clean the surface with glass cleaner before applying. Dry it fully.

  3. Activate the tip

Press the tip down until color appears, on scrap first.

  4. Draw

Use light, even strokes. Keep designs at least below the rim on drinking glasses, away from where lips touch.

  5. Air cure

Let the painted project air cure approximately 8 hours.

  6. Bake for durability (optional)

For oven-safe pieces: place in a cool oven, set to 325 °F, bake 30 minutes, then cool with the oven door partially open.

Steps from DecoArt’s transparent marker page, which says baking gives a dishwasher-safe finish on oven-safe surfaces.

Bake times differ: follow your package

DecoArt’s own pages do not all agree. The transparent marker page gives an 8 hour air cure and 325 °F for 30 minutes in a cool oven. DecoArt’s glass paint marker set page says to allow a 4 day cure, then heat to 275 °F, bake 30 minutes and cool in the oven, and says the markers can be baked for a dishwasher-safe finish. Use the instructions printed on the package you bought, and always start in a cool oven so the glass heats with it. Never put cold glass into a hot oven.

Questions people ask

How to use DecoArt Glass Paint?

For the Glass Paint Markers, DecoArt says: shake well, clean the surface with glass cleaner, and press the tip down until color appears. Let the project air cure about 8 hours. For a dishwasher-safe finish on oven-safe pieces, place it in a cool oven, set it to 325 °F, bake 30 minutes, and cool with the door partly open. DecoArt’s set page gives a different schedule, so follow the instructions on your own package.

Can we use acrylic markers on glass?

Yes, for decoration. Water-based acrylic markers such as Posca draw well on glass, but Posca says its paint stays erasable on smooth surfaces and wipes off with a damp rag, so it suits windows and temporary designs. For glassware that will be washed, use a glass paint marker made to be baked, such as DecoArt’s, and keep paint off lips and food areas.

Do Sharpie paint pens wash off glass?

Sharpie oil-based paint markers are made for nonporous surfaces like glass and are much harder to wash off than water-based markers once dry, though they can scratch with scrubbing. They are not sold as dishwasher safe. For washable glassware, a bake-on glass marker is the safer choice, and for temporary window art, a water-based or chalk marker.

What kind of markers do you use on glass?

It depends on how long it should last. For washable glassware, bake-on glass paint markers such as DecoArt or KREUL. For long-lasting decor that will not be washed often, oil-based paint markers. For windows and temporary signs, water-based paint markers or liquid chalk markers that wipe off.
